His lab applies these tools to advance precision personalized medicine across distinct disease domains: inflammatory bowel diseases and respiratory infectious diseases. Making a meaningful contribution to personalized medicine in any of these areas requires highly collaborative multidisciplinary science. As such, they work closely with clinical, translational, basic science, and computational collaborators at UNC and around the world. Demonstrating sensitive and cost-effective assays for deeply characterizing the mucosa-associated microbiota will be critically important to enable large-scale studies of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel diseases and the development of personalize microbial therapy targeting microbial dysbiosis in human tissues.
