Kenan Distinguished Professor<br \/>\nDept. of Chemistry<br \/>\nDept. of\u00a0Biochemistry and Biophysics<br \/>\nDept. of\u00a0Microbiology and Immunology<br \/>\nDept. of\u00a0Genomics<br \/>\nSchool of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences<br \/>\nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Research Summary<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Matthew Redinbo\u2019s laboratory is focused on structure-function-inhibition studies <em>in vitro<\/em> and in utilizing subsequent animal and <em>ex vivo<\/em> studies, largely toward the gut microbiota.\u00a0 He employs structural and chemical biology methods, along with biochemistry, cell-based assays and <em>in vivo<\/em> model systems to understand how the gut microbiota impacts mammalian health.\u00a0 The work starts at the <em>in vitro<\/em> level, understanding at the mechanistic level how individual gut microbial enzymes process medically-relevant substrates, including many drugs.\u00a0 Such approaches are also applied to human nuclear receptors, pulmonary defense proteins, and medically-relevant kinases. The lab then develops potent inhibitors to these enzymes, and tests validated compounds in mouse and rat model systems to examine a range of phenotypes as well as gut microbial next-generation sequencing and metabolomics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance of Research to CGIBD Mission: <\/strong>\u00a0Research in the Redinbo lab seeks to understand at the mechanistic level how gut microbiota impacts mammalian health.
