Ensuring Equity in the Time of COVID-19

In response to COVID-19, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health and UNC CHER partnered to launch the webinar series, Communities in Partnership: Ensuring Equity in the Time of COVID-19.

Our ultimate goal is to create a national network of community and academic leaders mobilized to work in partnership with similar leaders. We hope you join us!

R or K Grant Workshops

Fall Semesters – Alternating between R and K Grant Workshops (annually)
This two-part workshop focuses on preparing and submitting proposals for R awards through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The workshop is designed so that participants have time to work on appropriate parts of their own proposals during the sessions. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback from your peers and from the workshop leader.

Health Equity Research Intensive (HERI)

June (annually)
The Health Equity Research Intensive (HERI) creates a space for community leaders, health care professionals and academics from across the state to connect, engage, and learn new tools, innovative methods and approaches for health equity research.

Paul A. Godley Health Equity Research Week

The Paul A. Godley Health Equity Research Week (HERW) brings faculty, staff, students and community members together to highlight and encourage health equity research, promote collaboration and networking, and encourage strategic planning and partnerships in the UNC School of Medicine, across UNC’s campus and beyond.

In 2020, the UNC School of Medicine, in collaboration with UNC CHER, held the first Paul A. Godley Health Equity Symposium. In 2023, the symposium is shifting to a research week with expanded opportunities to highlight health equity research from faculty, staff, students. community members and other partners. HERW will include research presentations, panel discussions and a keynote presentation.

CHER Research Summer Program

The CHER Research Summer Program Fellowship (CRSP) is an experiential opportunity for current UNC School of Medicine students to be involved in a community-engaged research project. CHER aims to foster development and implementation of student-led projects aimed at addressing health disparities in North Carolina.

The National Health Equity Research Webcast at Carolina is an interactive, live-streamed symposium that explores the intersection of health, policy and diversity.

The Merrimon Lectureship in Medicine

One of the UNC School of Medicine’s oldest and most prestigious endowed lectureships, the Merrimon Lectureship sponsors an annual event of public lectures and consultations involving a distinguished senior speaker addressing issues in the ethics and history of the health professions. The Center for Bioethics coordinates this lectureship, in collaboration with the UNC School of Medicine Dean’s Office.

The North Carolina team of the Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Against COVID-19 Disparities initiative, with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hosted a webinar about COVID-19 treatment options and covered the differences between the various COVID-19 vaccines that are currently available.

In June, new federal regulations interpreted the ban on sex discrimination to exclude discrimination based on gender identity. That same month, the Supreme Court ruled that federal employment anti-discrimination law protects LGBT employees.
