SUMMARY:Computational Medicine Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Smita Krishnaswamy\, PhD \nTal Title: TBA \n \nDr. Smita Krishnaswamy is an Associate Professor in Genetics and Computer Science. She is affiliated with the applied math program\, computational biology program\, Yale Center for Biomedical Data Science\, and Yale Cancer Center. Her lab works on the development of machine learning techniques to analyze high-dimensional high throughput biomedical data. Her focus is on unsupervised machine learning methods\, specifically manifold learning and deep learning techniques for detecting structure and patterns in data. She has developed algorithms for non-linear dimensionality reduction and visualization\, learning data geometry\, denoising\, imputation\, inference of multi-granular structure\, and inference of feature networks from big data. Her group has applied these techniques to many data types such as single-cell RNA-sequencing\, mass cytometry\, electronic health records\, and connectomic data from a variety of systems. Specific application areas include immunology\, immunotherapy\, cancer\, neuroscience\, developmental biology\, and health outcomes. Smita has a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Clinical Data Literacy Series
DESCRIPTION:Recruitment email to send out with workshop application \nEmail subject line: Announcement – Research with EHR Data Workshop | June 7-11\, 2021 \n  \nClinical Data Literacy Series: Electronic Health Data Basics \nThe UNC Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care (PPMH)\, School of Medicine Clinical Research Support Office and NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (TraCS) are organizing a hands-on virtual workshop that will introduce participants to   electronic health record (EHR) data. Content will include EHR data structure\, how to query EHR data and interpret the results and limitations of those queries\, how to deal with missing data\, and an introduction to the Carolina Data Warehouse. During the workshop\, participants will work with a de-identified EHR data set based on actual patient records. The workshop is aimed at UNC researchers\, students\, and clinicians who would like to use EHR data in research. \nThe workshop be taught via Zoom from 9am-12pm ET on Monday June 7\, Wednesday June 9\, and Friday June 11\, 2021. \nPoints to note: \n\nThe workshop is open to researchers with a current UNC-CH affiliation and onyen.\nSince the content will build upon sequential learning\, participants will be required to attend all sessions.\nA laptop or desktop computer with a second monitor is highly recommended.\nThe number of workshop participants will be limited to ensure that everyone receives adequate attention from the instructors and TAs.\nThere is no charge to attend\, but space is limited. We anticipate strong interest\, and we will from the pool of applicants.\n\n  \nApplication procedure: \nIf you are interested in attending the workshop\, fill out the application form by 9:00am Wednesday May 12\, 2021. Email precisionmedicine@med.unc.edu if you have any questions. \nWe will send out acceptance notifications the week of May 17. \n

SUMMARY:Computational Medicine Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Muyinatu Bell\, PhD \n“Listening to the Sound of Light to Guide Surgeries” \nPhotoacoustic imaging offers “x-ray vision” to see beyond tool tips and underneath tissue during surgical procedures\, yet no ionizing x-rays are required. Instead\, optical fibers and acoustic receivers enable photoacoustic sensing of major structures – like blood vessels and nerves – that are otherwise hidden from view. The entire process is initiated by delivering laser pulses through optical fibers to illuminate regions of interest\, causing an acoustic response that is detectable with ultrasound transducers. Beamforming is then implemented to create a photoacoustic image. In this talk\, I will highlight novel light delivery systems\, new spatial coherence beamforming theory\, deep learning alternatives to beamforming\, and robotic integration methods\, each pioneered by the Photoacoustic & Ultrasonic Systems Engineering (PULSE) Lab to enable an exciting new frontier of photoacoustic-guided surgery. This new paradigm has the potential to eliminate the occurrence of major complications (e.g.\, excessive bleeding\, paralysis\, accidental patient death) during a wide range of delicate surgeries and procedures\, including neurosurgery\, cardiac catheter-based interventions\, liver surgery\, spinal fusion surgery\, hysterectomies\, biopsies\, and teleoperative robotic surgeries.
