SUMMARY:Embracing Unique Next-Gen Sequencing Technologies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free seminar.Lunch provided with RSVP to Katherine T. Berger \nSeminar Summaries: \ngenoTYPER-NEXT \nTraditional screening methods for on/off target effects from genome editing experiments may be time consuming\, ineffective\, and/or expensive. GENEWIZ has developed a method to alleviate all of these pain points\, termed genoTYPER-NEXT. This proprietary method includes interactive data exploration to promote in-depth\, scalable\, clone analysis. \n Metagenomics \nShotgun genome sequencing\, coupled with GENEWIZ’s proprietary bioinformatics pipeline\, allows researchers to visualize and interact with their data for species identification and functional significance. GENEWIZ also offers custom targeted 16S sequencing using their optimized MetaVx™ service and is developing a full length 16S assay for the PacBio Sequel. \n Additional Next-Gen Sequencing Technologies \n\nGENEWIZ has recently released ultra-long read sequencing on the PacBio Sequel for WGS. \nThe 10X Genomics Chromium provides true single-cell RNA-seq library preparation with compatibility for Illumina HiSeq sequencing. \n\n Speaker: \nJessica Oates\, Technical Application Scientist at GENEWIZ in the Next-Generation Sequencing area\, providing project consultation for the HTSF NGS services.

SUMMARY:Seminar: New Tools for the Emerging Field of Single-Cell Analysis
DESCRIPTION:As the use of NGS advances in clinical and applied spaces\, the parallelprocessing of single cells from precious patient samples at highthroughputs will be critical. With increasing demand for single-cell NGSanalyses\, several platforms have emerged based on microfluidics\, such as droplet-based and multisample nanodispensing technologies. The ICELL8™ Single-Cell System enables researchers to look at hundreds of cells in a heterogeneous cell population without common microfluidic cell-size constraints\, and the imaging limitations of the droplet-based systems\, thereby reducing sample-handling artifacts. \nSpeaker: John F. Sojda III\, PhD\, with Takara Bio USA\, Inc. \nPlease RSVP to Katherine Berger: kberger@email.unc.edu \nCoffee provided by Department of Genetics

SUMMARY:Genomics Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The High Throughput Sequencing Facility and the Department of Genetics present a genomics seminar with Bionano: \nThe majority of many complex genomes are made up of repetitive and regulatory elements. Short read sequencing or exome sequence strategies\, while very powerful\, are unable to map these highly repetitive sequences. As a result\, critical information about the genome may be missed when analysis relies on NGS technologies alone. \nBionano Genomics’ platform for whole genome mapping allows for extremely long read data\, resulting in unmatched sensitivity and specificity to detect large structural variation. Our de novo maps can resolve complex repetitive regions\, identify Copy Number Variations\, and elucidate genome-wide large structural variation like balanced/unbalanced translocations\, inversions\, and large indels. \nSpecific examples will be presented of how Bionano’s platform is helping provide a molecular diagnosis for patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy\, identify potential causative variants for patients with undiagnosed genetic disorders\, and how it has been applied to discover large\, potentially oncogenic genomic rearrangements in prostate cancer and leukemia that were missed by NGS. \nSpeaker: Sven Bockland\, PhD\, Sr. Application Specialist\, Bionano \nLunch provided with RSVP

SUMMARY:BRIC Small Animal Imaging Facility Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT): Recent Applications and Technological Developments\nOptoacoustics is an emerging field of biomedical imaging. Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) is a powerful molecular imaging technology which provides optical contrast at depth. It provides the capacity to separate endogenous chromophores such as oxy-/deoxy-haemoglobin\, melanin\, lipids and collagen\, as well as extrinsically administered agents including nanoparticles and fluorescent dyes. With a focus on new developments in the field\, this presentation will cover both technology as well as research driven applications. SUMMARY:Seminar: The Antibody Crisis: Leveraging machine learning for evidence-based antibody search
DESCRIPTION:The“reproducibility crisis” has generated much attention in the research community over the past years. While the issue is multifaceted at its core\, rogue antibodies have been identified as one of the major culprits. \n\nTo ensure scientists can find antibodies that have been proven to work repeatedly by peers\, we developed an open-access resource that uses a machine learning algorithm to screen the literature and identify which and how antibodies have been cited. The resulting peer-reviewed data are searchable by protein targets or product identifier\, and are filterable by experimental contexts as cited in papers\, including technique\, tissue\, cell line\, to help users pinpoint antibodies that have been published under experimental conditions matching their study interest.  \nFreely accessible resource for UNC and affiliated scientists at https://www.benchsci.com \n  \nPlease RSVP for free pizza at the end of the talk: https://forms.gle/zvHZzBANjbLtX7io9
