SUMMARY:Instrumentation Grant Panel for Core Facilities
DESCRIPTION:We will be holding a panel discussion on October 12\, 2023 to discuss several of the extramural grants that can be used to replace or add instrumentation to cores. This panel will be led by subject matter experts: peer core directors who have successfully applied for grants or who have sat on study sections to evaluate these grants.\n\nOur panelists will be:\n\n\nDr. Chun Hsing (Josh) Chen (Department of Chemistry X-Ray Core Facility) discussing the NSF MRI\nDr. Pablo Airel (Microscopy Services Laboratory) discussing the NIH S10 mechanism\nDr. Brandie Ehrmann (ATOMS Core – Previously the Department of Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Core)    discussing the DoD DURIP program and working with faculty members who want to place instrumentation in cores\nDr. Ashutosh (Ash) Tripathy (Macromolecular Interactions Facility) discussing the NCBC IIG grant\nDr. Paul Maddox (Associate Director\, Department of Biology; William Burwell Harrison Scholar) discussing NIH study sections\n\n\n\nIf you are considering applying for an extramural instrumentation grant\, we encourage you to attend. If you are aware of faculty who are interested in learning more about instrumentation grants and how to partner with a core facility to obtain an instrument\, please feel free to forward. Lunch will be provided for attendees who RSVP before October 1\, 2023.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This is planned to be an in-person meeting. We will make an effort to record the meeting but are not planning to have a live zoom feed at this time.\n\nWhat:  Instrumentation Grant Panel Discussion\nWhere:  Carolina Union\nWhen: October 12\, 2023 12pm – 1:30 pm\n\nTO RSVP:  please e-mail Kara Clissold at kara_clissold@med.unc.edu with your name and any dietary restrictions.  A calendar invite will be forwarded to you at that time.

SUMMARY:UNC Core Facilities Workshop: Green Initiatives for Core Facilities
DESCRIPTION:Core facilities are often high-throughput users of lab consumables and high-energy usage equipment. Come learn about lab sustainability initiatives at UNC Chapel Hill and how they can help your lab reach a more sustainable status. Learn about: \n– What is allowed to go in recycling? What is not? What even happens to the recycling anyway?\n– Are there resources for buying a new ultra-low temperature freezer? What if it’s an emergency? How do I maintain one for best performance?\n– What can I do with excess supplies? Are there resources for labs to share unused supplies or equipment?\n– What sustainable options are our vendors bringing to campus? How can I make it financially feasible to participate? \nCome listen to Cindy Shea\, Sustainability Director at Sustainable Carolina and Dr. Patricia Basta\, Director of the BioSpecimen Processing Facility and leader in green lab solutions for core facilities\, talk about these things and more! \nQuestions ahead of time? Send them to Kara Clissold at kara_clissold@med.unc.edu. \nThis event will be held as hybrid. For those who wish to attend in person\, the meeting will be held in Mary Ellen Jones room 3112. SUMMARY:Introduction to Protocols.io Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to protocols.io\nTuesday\, May 23 at 11:00 am in Room 3116 MEJ\nPresented by Gabriel Gasque\, PhD\n\n\nResearch papers and protocol organization in labs often lack detailed instructions for repeating experiments. protocols.io is an open-access platform for researchers to collaboratively create step-by-step\, interactive and dynamic protocols that can be run on mobile or web. Researchers can share protocols with colleagues\, collaborators\, the scientific community or make them public\, with ease and efficiency. Real-time communication and interaction keep protocols up to date with versioning\, forking/copying\, Q&A\, and troubleshooting. Public protocols receive a DOI and allow open communication with authors and researchers to encourage efficient experimentation and reproducibility. Join this seminar in person or via Zoom to learn more about protocols.io.\n\n \n\n\nThis one-hour seminar will include:\n\n\n \n\n\n1. Introduction to protocol.io’s mission and key functionality\n\n\n2. How to create your own protocols\, share methods with others\, and how to publish protocols\n\n\n3. Q&A \n \n\nCalendar invite\, Zoom link\, and sign-up details to follow.

SUMMARY:ABRF Town Hall: Instilling a Culture of Collaboration and Mindfulness Around Core Instrumentation (with UNC's Michelle Itano!)
DESCRIPTION:Many shared resource facilities support instrumentation that is provided to end instrument operators in either a semi- or completely unsupervised manner. To effectively manage these resources\, it’s important to build operational structures that instill trust between core members and instrument operators. Core directors and staff need to be able to tune messaging and training to connect with the different strata of their user base – day-to-day users\, occasional customers that need updated training\, primary investigators\, and research administration. Core staff must also be able to put safety\, policy\, and engineering controls in place to ensure proper material and data handling\, that troubleshooting is robust and instrument issues are dealt with quickly and fairly\, and that the systems managed by the Core will generate validated and trustworthy results. In this town hall\, we’ll discuss success stories and implementation strategies used by two shared resource facilities and share how they grow a culture of respectful communication between staff and instrument operators. \n  \nPre-registration is requited: https://www.abrf.org/virtual-town-halls

SUMMARY:ORT Core Facility Workshop- Quality Audits of Cores: Awareness and Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Core labs that work with biotech/pharma companies or federal agencies may be subject to mandatory quality audits\, based on company policy and GLP standards.  In this workshop\, we will discuss what a quality audit entails\, how to prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs)\, and the resources available to ensure a successful audit. Dr. Chris Gregory\, Director of ORT\, will present this with the experience of having guided multiple UNC cores through the audit process and of undergoing quality audits at pharmaceutical companies—come with any questions about the process and how you can prepare ahead of time! Register here for an IN-PERSON session (held in Genetics Medicine Building) on February 9th– spots are limited.
