Residents typically work 8 half-day clinics per week. A typical week could be comprised of several general dermatology clinics, a surgery clinic, pediatric dermatology clinic and one of our subspecialty clinics.<\/p>\n<p>Mohs surgery rotations are completed in week-long blocks divided throughout the year and exposure increases by year of training (2 weeks for 1<sup>st<\/sup> years; 3 weeks for 2<sup>nd<\/sup> years; 3 weeks for 3<sup>rd<\/sup> years).<\/p>\n<p>Dermatopathology is taught during formal didactic sessions on Friday mornings. Residents also complete a 4 week dermatopathology block each year. The on-call resident participates in morning sign out during hospital weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Residents start taking inpatient call during their second year of training, and call is divided into week-long segments during which there are no other clinical responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Each resident has 4 weeks of elective time to pursue opportunities for enrichment during training, either within the university or at other institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Each resident has 9 conference days to use per year of training.\u00a0 See below for additional details and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>SPECIALTY CLINICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Contact Dermatitis<\/li>\n<li>Cosmetic Dermatology<\/li>\n<li>Cutaneous Lymphoma<\/li>\n<li>Department of Corrections (incarcerated patients)<\/li>\n<li>Dermatological Surgery (non-Mohs)<\/li>\n<li>Dermatopathology<\/li>\n<li>General Adult Dermatology<\/li>\n<li>Hidradenitis Suppurativa &amp; Follicular Disorders<\/li>\n<li>High Risk Skin Cancer<\/li>\n<li>Autoimmune Blistering Disorders<\/li>\n<li>Inpatient Consultative Service<\/li>\n<li>Laser Services<\/li>\n<li>Mohs Surgery<\/li>\n<li>Pediatric Dermatology<\/li>\n<li>Piedmont Health Services<\/li>\n<li>Pigmented Lesion\/Melanoma<\/li>\n<li>Rheumatologic Dermatology<\/li>\n<li>Resident Continuity Clinics<\/li>\n<li>Urgent Care\/Hospital Follow Up Clinic<\/li>\n<li>Vulvar Dermatology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>RESIDENT CONTINUITY CLINIC AND URGENT CARE CLINICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Resident continuity and urgent care clinics allow for graduated autonomy in patient care with faculty supervision.<\/p>\n<p><em>Continuity Clinics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the second year and third years of training, residents will participate in continuity clinics located at our Hillsborough office. Each resident will oversee the medical and surgical needs of a panel of patients.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty supervisors are Dr. Donna Culton, Dr. Jayson Miedema, and Dr. Edith Bowers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Urgent care\/Hospital Follow-up Clinic<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Residents will also rotate through the Urgent Care\/Hospital Follow-Up clinic. In this setting, residents will develop advanced clinical and procedural skills in the evaluation and treatment of dermatology conditions and learn how to triage patients with acute dermatologic complaints. This clinic will permit on-call residents to have continuity of care of patients between the inpatient and outpatient settings.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty supervisors are Dr. Rachel Blasiak, Dr. Carolyn Ziemer, and Dr. Maggie Coates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>DIDACTICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Friday morning didactics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Structured didactic activities occur every Friday morning from 8:00a-12:00p.\u00a0 Greater than 80% of the lectures are faculty-given, with residents leading approximately 20% of sessions.<\/p>\n<p>In-person attendance is required for didactic conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Our conference room has been up-fitted with audio-visual equipment to allow for high-definition projection of sessions through interactive Zoom platform for lectures to permit virtual visiting speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Components of our weekly academic sessions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dermatopathology\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly formal review of structured topic (1hr)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Major topic lectures\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly lectures covering a wide range of core dermatology topics (1-2 hours weekly)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Kodachromes (Weekly)\n<ul>\n<li>Unknown cases are projected. Residents are asked to provide differential diagnoses and potential evaluation strategies. Reviewed weekly with faculty preceptor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Surgical lectures\n<ul>\n<li>High yield procedural and cosmetic topics (Rotating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Basic Science lectures\n<ul>\n<li>Review of high-yield topics in basic science and with emphasis on clinical relevance (Rotating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Journal Club\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty member selects several articles for critical appraisal and review (Rotating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clinical Pathological Correlation Conference\n<ul>\n<li>In this conference, interesting patients with attendant teaching value are reviewed. Rotating faculty preceptors run the conference including oral examination of the residents\u2019 knowledge base, evaluation strategy, and treatment plans (Rotating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Other formal didactic sessions<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thursday 12-1 lunch conferences with rotating topics: Boards Review, Kodachromes, and QA\/Patient Safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>CONFERENCES <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4>Local<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>UNC-Duke Conference<br \/>\nBi-annual gatherings or UNC and Duke faculty and residents to review patient cases and advance therapeutics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>UNC Melanoma Conference<br \/>\nAll residents are required to attend UNC&#8217;s annual melanoma multidisciplinary conference with updates on complex management strategies of local and advanced melanomas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Regional<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>NC Dermatology Association<br \/>\nResidents are encouraged to attend the NCDA winter meeting, and to submit abstracts for presentation.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ncmedsoc.org\/north-carolina-dermatology-association\">https:\/\/www2.ncmedsoc.org\/north-carolina-dermatology-association<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SEC<br \/>\nAll of our first and second-year residents are to attend the annual Southeastern Consortium on Dermatology (SEC), a regionally based clinical meeting which rotates each year among the 10 participating academic dermatology programs.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/secderm.org\/\">https:\/\/secderm.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>National<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>AAD<br \/>\nWe encourage all residents to attend the annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting. One second-year resident will remain home to take call during this time.
