Throughout the year, the fellows will be expected to attend and participate in daily sign-out\u00a0sessions, consensus conferences, grand rounds, tumor boards, and lectures in dermatology and pathology.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mission and Program Aims<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Our mission is to train expert, independent dermatopathologists who deliver accurate, timely, and clinically meaningful diagnoses while advancing patient care, education, scholarship, and health equity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><div class=\"col-lg-4 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><div class = \"alert alert-info notification-dark-blue oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><strong>Patient Care:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"hwc-list-flush-left\" style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Accurate and efficient microscopic diagnosis<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Strong clinicopathologic correlation<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Clear communication with clinicians and patients<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Emphasis on patient safety and quality improvement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><div class = \"alert alert-info notification-med-blue oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><strong>Medical Knowledge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"hwc-list-flush-left\">\n<li>Inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic skin diseases<\/li>\n<li>Special stains, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and appropriate use of molecular techniques<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to lifelong learning<\/li>\n<li>Conduct scholarly activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><div class = \"alert alert-info notification-dark-blue oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><strong>Professionalism &amp; Systems-Based Practice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"hwc-list-flush-left\">\n<li>Ethical and professional conduct<\/li>\n<li>Practice with integrity<\/li>\n<li>Understanding laboratory operations and healthcare systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Training Structure &amp; Daily Workflow<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Training is tailored to fellows from either dermatology or pathology backgrounds. The first 8 months fellows will spend 50% of their day in dermatopathology and 50% of their day in surgical pathology (Dermatology background) or dermatology clinics (Pathology background). The last 4 months of the fellowship will be spent entirely in Dermatopathology.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pathology-trained fellows:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fellows previously trained in pathology are expected to rotate through various dermatology clinics\u00a0in\u00a0their first 8 months (50% clinical dermatology, 50% dermatopathology). The clinics include general dermatology, immunobullous clinic, mucosal disease clinics, CTCL, pediatric dermatology, and cutaneous surgery\/Mohs at UNC Chapel Hill Dermatology clinics,\u00a0to gain experience with clinicopathologic correlation.\u00a0 Fellows are expected to see a minimum of 500 patients by shadowing a dermatology faculty member.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend the dermatology clinics daily as an observer over a period of 8 months.<\/li>\n<li>The goal of attending clinics is to learn diagnostic dermatology and generate\u00a0differential diagnoses from the clinical visit, emphasizing\u00a0the value of clinical correlation\u00a0and the role dermatopathologists play in clinical care.<\/li>\n<li>Learn appropriate biopsies and excisions techniques of skin lesions,\u00a0along with proper site selection and clinical differential diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Attend cutaneous surgery clinics and have the opportunity to perform biopsies and\/or excisions.<\/li>\n<li>Serve as a liaison between the dermatopathology division and dermatology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Dermatology-trained fellows:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fellows with a dermatology background will rotate through various relevant surgical pathology subspecialties in\u00a0their first 8 months (50% surgical pathology, 50% dermatopathology) in order to get exposure to areas of pathology that overlap with dermatopathology. This occurs at UNC Hospital McClendon Laboratories.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rotate on various pathology services including Head and Neck pathology, Sarcoma pathology, Gynecologic pathology, Hematopathology, and Molecular pathology,<\/li>\n<li>Review grossing techniques and the grossing manual of dermatopathology specimens.<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to perform gross description and dictation of pathology specimens with particular attention to skin specimens.<\/li>\n<li>Learn specimen processing techniques and different media\u00a0used for different tests (e.g., electron microscopy, direct immunofluorescence, molecular studies, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Learn relevant molecular techniques that are applied in Dermatopathology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Facilities &amp; Resources:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>High-volume dermatopathology service (12,000+ cases annually)<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive immunohistochemistry and direct immunofluorescence<\/li>\n<li>In-house digital slide scanning and exposure to AI applications<\/li>\n<li>Dedicated fellow workspace, microscope, and computer<\/li>\n<li>Access to UNC libraries and dermatopathology textbooks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Eligibility and Requirements:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Applicants must be US citizens, legal permanent residents (green card holders), or J1 visa holders who have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in Dermatology or Pathology (Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic Pathology\/Clinical Pathology) and be board-eligible or board-certified prior to fellowship start.
