You will encounter moments of, \u201cWhy did I get a cochlear implant if I can\u2019t understand everything.\u201d My advice to you would be, just keep going and you\u2019ll gain confidence.\u00a0Keep working at \u201cstoring\u201d sounds and voices so you\u2019ll be able to understand more things as you move\u00a0along in your journey. Don\u2019t be afraid to reach out to fellow cochlear implant wearers because they will be more than happy to guide you throughout any obstacles or struggles you\u2019re currently going through.\u00a0 ~Emily, age 19<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/earandhearing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/754\/2018\/06\/emily-image2-300x300.png\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Emily as a college student<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/earandhearing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/754\/2018\/06\/emily-image3-300x255.png\" alt=\"image3\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Emily at age 9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A freshman at Lenoir-Rhyne University, majoring in Public Relations &amp; Human and Community Services, Emily enjoys her world of sound, and relies on Cued Speech to understand her teachers, friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s family first researched the possibility of cochlear implants for her when she was 3 years old, but because she has bilateral cochlear dysplasia, she was not deemed a candidate. Her family chose to learn and use Cued Speech to communicate with and educate their daughter. Six years later, as individuals with abnormal cochleae were being considered CI candidates, Emily and her family chose to give it a try. Prior to implantation, as a result of learning to communicate through Cued Speech, Emily already had age-appropriate language skills. Though she does not exclusively rely on her hearing to communicate, using her cochlear implant has made Emily more connected to her surroundings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><!-- description --> <\/p>\n<p class='lead'>Your journey will not be a smooth ride.
