Intensive Summer Research Training in Emergency Medicine (ISTEM)

The ISTEM program expands the number of medical students’ exposed to research and launching students on a pathway to emergency medicine research. The overarching goal of the program is to serve as a resource for engaging primarily rising second-year UNC-CH medical students in emergency medicine research, with the intent of recruiting physicians into a lifelong research career. The short-term goal of the program is to provide medical students with a meaningful research experience early in their medical school careers emphasizing the treatment of acute severe or life-threatening illness and injury.

ERMD 101: Diversity in Discipline, Professions, and Patient Populations

The Department of Emergency Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill is excited to continue offering an introductory medical student elective called “Emergency Medicine: Diversity in Discipline, Professions, and Patient Population”. This 4-week (6 credit hour) course will be offered in June for students in the Foundation Phase. The elective will allow students to participate in lectures, procedure labs, simulation, and clinical experiences that introduce them to the specialty of Emergency Medicine, its unique scope of practice, combination of professions, and varied patient population. After learning these core components, medical students will have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills while working with local high school and college students participating in a pathway program in the department. Through these experiences, we will explore how the specialty of Emergency Medicine addresses healthcare disparities. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact the Course Director, Maglin Halsey-Nichols (maglin_halsey@med.unc.edu).
