What is ISHTaR?<\/h2>\n

At the University of North Carolina School of Medicine (UNC-SO<\/span>M), <\/span><\/span>we <\/span>aim to promote a compassionate <\/span>culture focused on improving the health of all North Carolinians. <\/span><\/span>The Internship in Science Health Training and Research (<\/span>ISHTaR<\/span>) program is sponsored by UNC\u2019s Department of Emergency Medicine<\/span>. This internship<\/span> is designed to help local <\/span>h<\/span>igh <\/span>s<\/span>chool <\/span><\/span>students develop research skills and explore career<\/span><\/span> options in medicine and public health over the summer. The project aims t<\/span><\/span>o increase exposure to health care and public health by <\/span>impacti<\/span><\/span>ng<\/span> and inspiring the next generation of clinicians<\/span> and researchers<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ISHTaR<\/span> offers many opportunities to help interns gain experience in research and clinical medicine<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Each year\u2019s activities are unique and dependent on available research opportunities and the interns\u2019 interests.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ISHTaR<\/span> provides<\/span>:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Working with a team of researchers on a variety of projects\n
      \n
    • Planning health communications materials for lay and clinical audiences<\/li>\n
    • Creating informational documents for research partners<\/li>\n
    • Developing educational courses<\/li>\n
    • Reviewing literature on health conditions and programs related to emergency medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Shadowing clinicians in practice and developing mentorships\n
        \n
      • Shadowing EMS paramedics on an ambulance<\/li>\n
      • Shadowing physicians during inpatient and outpatient efforts<\/li>\n
      • Discussing life experiences and careers pathways with clinicians and researchers<\/li>\n
      • Other experiences tailored to the student\u2019s interests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Team activities\n

        • Book club exploring complex healthcare-related issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          What to expect from <\/span>ISHTaR<\/span>:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

          • Hybrid work environment<\/span><\/span>\n
              \n
            • Each week consists of <\/span>1-<\/span>3 in-person days<\/span>. Interns <\/span>must have reliable transportation<\/span> to in-person days.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • No housing, food, or transportation provided<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            • A minimum of 20 hours of paid work per week<\/li>\n
            • Flexible Summer start and end dates to align with the intern\u2019s school year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

              The ISHTaR Experience<\/h2>\n

              To <\/span>facilitate<\/span> futu<\/span>re<\/span> high school students exploring summer internship opportunities, our <\/span><\/span>2023<\/span> & 2024<\/span> ISHTaR<\/span> cohorts each <\/span>developed a video<\/span><\/span> to share their summer internship experience. <\/span>These <\/span>videos <\/span>are<\/span> a great example<\/span> of how experiences can differ <\/span>t<\/span>hroughout <\/span>the <\/span>years based off intern interests. <\/span>For a firsthand look at their <\/span>summers<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> check out t<\/span>he videos down below<\/span>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
