Overview<\/h2>\n

Providing emergency care to the older adult population (aged 65 years and older) presents a unique challenge as older adults often have multiple co-morbidities, complex social situations, and limited abilities to advocate for themselves. As this population grows to an estimated 25% of emergency department visits in 2020, it is imperative that emergency physicians are prepared to clinically care for these patients and to lead health care reform to better meet their needs at a system level. Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Fellowships were created to meet this need. The UNC Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship is one or two years in length, with additional graduate course work expected in the two-year program. The fellowship provides strong clinical training in care specific to older adults, with an additional focus on research, education, or administration.<\/p>\n
