Overview<\/h2>\n

Research is essential for improving the quality of emergency medical care and developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for novel emergent conditions. Although there are many paths to a successful career in medical research, mentored research training is the most widely accepted approach. The Research Fellowship at the University of North Carolina\u2019s Department of Emergency Medicine leverages outstanding research expertise and resources within the department, methodology training opportunities through top-ranked UNC Gillings School of Public Health<\/a>, and a strong cross-campus culture of collaboration to give emergency physicians the skills to develop a research career. Because the transition to independent research funding following residency typically takes 4-6 years, for Fellows who want to pursue an independent research career, focus during the Fellowship is placed on supporting the transition to a career development award to allow further training.
