Dre, Margaret, Olivia, & Raf | 2025-2026 UNC EM Chief Residents<\/p>\n

“On behalf of the University of North Carolina Department of Emergency Medicine, we welcome you to the field of Emergency Medicine. We are honored and excited that your search for the perfect residency program brought you here! We are proud of our program and excited about what this year will bring.<\/p>\n

The UNC EM residency was founded in 1996 by Dr. Judith Tintinalli (yes, the one who wrote the book). We offer the ideal blend of academic training at\u00a0UNC Hospitals<\/a>\u00a0in Chapel Hill as well as a state-of-the-art private community setting at\u00a0WakeMed Health and Hospitals<\/a>\u00a0in Raleigh. Both facilities are Level One Trauma Centers and attract exceptional educators across all fields. This combination of academic and community exposure \u2013 as well as regular experiences at smaller affiliated hospitals \u2013 provides a unique experience that prepares our residents for practice in any setting. An integrated longitudinal pediatric experience at the\u00a0WakeMed Children\u2019s ED<\/a>\u00a0exposes our residents to high acuity across all seasons led by a veteran faculty with a commitment to teaching.<\/p>\n

Our curriculum is particularly comprehensive. We routinely integrate simulation at the WakeMed Medical Simulation Center<\/a>. We do several special conference events each year including wilderness medicine days (on scene in the beautiful NC woods), joint conference days with Duke, and mass casualty simulation with our local military base EM affiliates. We have multiple fellowship-trained ultrasound faculty, and offer early ultrasound exposure during intern year with the opportunity for ultrasound credentialing upon graduation. There are endless opportunities for innovation, research and practice development with a faculty that provides close support.<\/p>\n

Apart from work, we love to get outside in a state that has everything you could imagine from the beautiful and historic Outer Banks to majestic stretches of the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Family is important to us and we regularly have resident families at our events, academic and otherwise. This culminates in our yearly beach retreat where we review the residency, make resident-driven changes, and enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n

We are excited for you as you begin the next step of your career. We look forward to meeting you in person and hope you fall in love with this place as quickly as we did on our interview days (even if it is virtual).
