I had lived in Texas my entire life and wanted to experience a different part of the country, as terrifying as that notion was. On my interview day with UNC, I felt an immediate “click”; I knew that I could feel at home with this program despite a move of more than 1,000 miles. UNC was also exactly what I was looking for – a strong program with a wide range of training experiences and faculty who are dedicated to developing strong leaders in Emergency Medicine. I really enjoyed every faculty and resident that I spoke with, and I could tell that they truly were happy with this program and each other. Looking back on my notes that I took that day, I had written an embarrassing number of exclamation points. The last sentence said, “I LOVE THIS PROGRAM!!!!”. Someone once told me that when you are making your rank list the decision should be easy, and UNC afforded me that blessing. From the pre-interview social to the interview itself, it became clear that the people comprising the program were my kind of people – authentic and down to earth. Additionally, UNC carries a robust academic and clinical reputation with multiple and varied training centers providing both high acuity and volume. Each site renders a unique experience which generates residents who are proficient and leaders within the field of emergency medicine. The location is also second to none as the Triangle is one of the best places to live for families and individuals alike.
Email: jesse.puscheck@unchealth.unc.edu

<hr style="margin:30px 0"class=" rule-thin osc-rule" />

John Riley

Hometown: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Undergraduate: University of California, Berkeley
Medical School: UNC
Areas of Interest in EM: EMS, Wilderness Medicine, Critical Care, Medical Education
Hobbies: Dad stuff, the outdoors, photography, playing guitar and pretending to play piano
Why I chose: I was impressed by the variety of clinical experiences available at UNC, including at WakeMed Raleigh, one of the busiest emergency departments in the United States. Prior to starting medical school, I worked as a scribe in the UNC Emergency Department and had already seen firsthand how passionate the faculty was about the resident’s education. Not to mention, they provided a tremendous amount of support to me both prior to and throughout medical school. As an away student, faculty and residents were excited about teaching and immediately made me feel like part of the team.
