This award recognizes members of the UNC Hospitals’ house staff for their exemplary service, professional performance and compassionate patient care.<\/p>\n

Specifically, exceptional residents and fellows are nominated for demonstrating outstanding empathy for patients and families, effective listening to and communicating with patients and families, advocacy for and demonstration of the highest standards in patient care, and exemplary professional and interpersonal interactions with colleagues, staff, patients, and visitors.<\/p>\n

In total, five GME trainees were recognized this year, out of 1,000 trainees at UNC.<\/p>\n

About Dr. Guarino<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Guarino is originally from Buffalo, N.Y. and attended medical school at Lake Eerie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania prior to choosing UNC to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine.<\/p>\n

“UNC offers exceptional mentorship and opportunities to explore my many interests within the specialty,” says Dr. Guarino. “The variety of clinical sites, paired with excellent longitudinal experiences helps me prepare for a successful EM career.”<\/p>\n

For the 2024-2025 academic year she served as Chief Resident in UNC’s Emergency Medicine Department, leading didactic sessions, effectively and assiduously representing her peers as their voice to leadership, providing caring and thoughtful leadership withing her peer group, while earning the team’s trust, respect, and admiration.<\/p>\n

Dr. Guarino will complete her UNC Emergency Medicine training in June 2025, after which she will complete an EMS fellowship at Wake Forest University.<\/p>\n

A Dedicated, Steady, Calm and Compassionate Presence<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even amid the challenges and stresses inherent within emergency medicine, Dr. Guarino’s exceptional work ethic, positive outlook and professional demeanor have repeatedly proven to be an invaluable asset. She remains an unflappable presence even in difficult situations, while wearing a smile, focusing on problem-solving, and offering compassionate and personalized support for her colleagues as well each patient and their family members.<\/p>\n

In her role, Dr. Guarino has also repeatedly gone out of her way to provide additional support for other residents when they faced difficult patient cases and outcomes, challenges related to academic requirements, or just needed someone to provide a caring and thoughtful ear.<\/p>\n

Her widely recognized dedication to patients and their families complements her professional skills, ensuring consistently outstanding care for every patient she sees and serving as a role model for her peers and team members such as faculty, nurses and staff.<\/p>\n

Dr. Guarino is also a Captain in the US Army National Guard, where she has served as an emergency medicine physician and Evacuation Platoon leader, where she has been repeatedly recognized for her dedication to her duties and notable ability to perform under pressure were repeatedly recognized, and earned her a place on the Commandant’s List.<\/p>\n

About the Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

The award is named in honor of Dr. Robert C. Cefalo, M.D., Ph.D., who served 25 years as director of the residency and fellowship programs at UNC Hospitals, and as a model for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in defining the role of Designated Institutional Official.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The award includes a stipend to offset expenses associated with professional development and\/or attendance of scientific conferences or meetings that will enhance the recipient\u2019s knowledge and abilities in the health care setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
