What is a nasal deformity?<\/h2>\n

The nose is an important aspect of one\u2019s overall facial appearance. Although almost all noses have some degree of asymmetry, differences in the proportions are typically not noticeable to casual glances or interactions. When the differences become more pronounced, patients may become more aware of the asymmetries of their nose. These nasal deformities may distort the normal nasal landmarks and disrupt the incident light reflexes that give the nose a natural shape and appearance.<\/p>\n

In some cases, the nasal asymmetries or deformities can represent underlying medical conditions associated with the skin of the nose, such as masses, tumors, growths, or cysts.\u00a0 Other asymmetries can be the result of differences in facial growth patterns related to underlying genetics, excessive growth or mal-positioning of the septum, prior childhood injury, or the potential influence of sleep positioning or chronic mouth breathing.<\/p>\n

Patients that experience nasal trauma may experience temporary or permanent nasal deformities, and the nature and force of the nasal trauma usually influences the degree and extent of nasal deformity that is encountered.<\/p>\n

Nasal Deformity Surgery at the UNC Center for Facial Aesthetics<\/h2>\n

Most nasal deformities can be addressed with rhinoplasty surgery<\/a>. Although rhinoplasty is designed to address external deformities or asymmetries of the nose, it can be combined with functional nasal airway surgery<\/a> to optimize the overall benefit to the patient by improving both the nasal appearance and function.<\/p>\n
