About

Like most, the complex intricacies of head and neck anatomy completely blew Catherine Nguyen, MD’s mind and sucked her in early on in medical school. With a mixture of surgical and medical management, a diverse patient population of all ages, and interventions ranging from emergent, life-saving surgeries to preserving quality of life and how patients engage with the world around them, Dr. Nguyen came to realize that the breadth and depth of otolaryngology is second to none. What ultimately sold the deal was the people, accouding to Nguyen, “the hype about ENTs being the happy, supportive, down-to-earth surgeons is real!!!”

Why UNC? Picking UNC as my top choice to complete my otolaryngology training was immediately apparent to me as soon as I finished my sub-internship here. UNC has world class training with leaders in the field and abundant opportunities for mentorship and research across all the subspecialties. As a visiting medical student, I felt instantly welcomed and supported by the faculty and residents, and that they were genuinely invested in helping me learn and grow into an excellent otolaryngologist one day. It is truly one big family here! The added plus is being within driving distance to my family.
