Robert A. Buckmire, MD is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Voice and Swallowing of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. He is dedicated to the teaching and clinical management of swallowing disorders and voice disorders, as well as laryngeal and airway diseases.

Training:

Dr. Robert Buckmire graduated from Boston University with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology. He went on to pursue his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia. He had the pleasure of completing his residency in Otolaryngology here at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Buckmire went on to do fellowship training in Laryngology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon his return to the University of North Carolina in 2004 he helped to successfully establish the UNC Voice Center. He is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist.

Honors:

Dr. Buckmire is recognized as an authority in the field of Laryngology, and was an invited speaker at the fourth World Voice Congress in Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Buckmire has been elected to the” Academy of Educators” at the University of North Carolina, and has been awarded the March Floyd Riddle Research Distinguished Professorship within the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

Service:

Dr. Buckmire is the Director of the UNC Voice Center, Chief of the Division of Voice and Swallowing Disorders at UNC, and the Residency Program Director of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Care Philosophy:

Dr. Buckmire feels that it is important for both otolaryngology and speech language pathology to work closely in joint, multi-disciplinary clinics designed to comprehensively evaluate and treat both voice disorders and swallowing disorders. Dr. Buckmire is dedicated to the teaching and clinical management of swallowing disorders and voice disorders, as well as laryngeal and airway diseases.
