{"id":4261,"date":"2020-03-24T09:45:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T13:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ent\/?page_id=4261"},"modified":"2023-02-20T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T21:58:46","slug":"cleft-lip-and-palate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ent\/services\/pediatric-otolaryngology\/cleft-lip-and-palate\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleft Lip and Palate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prenatal visits are encouraged for parents with a cleft lip and\/or palate who are expecting a baby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your child has a cleft palate, evaluation for feeding will occur while you are still in the hospital after\u00a0birth, or with your first clinic visit.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Lip repair occurs at around 3 months.<\/li>\n<li>If the cleft lip is a wide unilateral or bilateral cleft lip, we may proceed with lip taping or NAM (Nasoalveolar\u00a0Molding) to prepare for surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Palate repair occurs at around 9-12 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4267\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 236px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/494\/2020\/03\/cleft-lip-before.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"232\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Cleft Lip Before Surgery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4275\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 219px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/494\/2020\/03\/cleft-lip-after_edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"229\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Cleft Lip After Surgery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We typically plan for ear tubes insertion at the time of palate surgery.\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Bone graft surgery occurs at around 7-10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secondary surgeries may be needed and can include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Lip and\/or nose revision (around 4-5 years)\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Speech surgery (around 3-8 years)<\/li>\n<li>Ear tube replacement<\/li>\n<li>Jaw surgery (approximately when teenager)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">All patients with a cleft lip and\/or palate will be seen annually by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentistry.unc.edu\/patientcare\/craniofacial\/\">UNC\u00a0Craniofacial Team<\/a>\u00a0until they are 18 years old.
