She enjoys spending time with her husband, and her cat (Edgar). A fun fact &#8211; snuggling with Edgar helped Allison compare her hearing before and after surgery. His purr was the &#8220;purr-fect&#8221; way for Allison to measure her recovery progress.<\/p>\n<p>Below is her story in her own words:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have had hearing loss ever since 2007 and then I had a full recovery back with normal hearing for about 10 years. Then in 2017, I fell extremely ill and lost my hearing in the same ear again, but this time, it was a significant hearing loss. I used to be an absolute social butterfly, but all of that changed after this hearing loss and COVID just made it even worse. At the time, I lived in a more rural area and the ENT that I saw was very hesitant to pursue a cochlear implant. For years, I wore hearing aids and struggled working as a Behavior Analyst in very noisy and complex environments &#8211; such as people&#8217;s homes and in clinics. Ultimately, suffering from frequent migraines and daily audio fatigue, my hearing loss forced me to change careers. After losing my hearing again and having to change careers &#8212; I had really become quite secluded. It wasn&#8217;t until my surgery and implantation that after ALL this time, I finally feel like my old self again &#8212; TRULY! My confidence is back. I&#8217;ve been going to plays, concerts, and shows. I don&#8217;t shy away from talking to people anymore. I&#8217;m not reluctant to go out to eat at a busy restaurant. My husband and I are so excited to travel again without having to worry about what I won\u2019t be able to hear. I was so eager to participate in UNC&#8217;s research as a way to give back. My implant has given me back so many things I had to abandon because of my hearing loss. Donating my time to this valuable research was the very least I could do. I never thought my hearing could be this good ever again. I&#8217;m convinced that UNC&#8217;s research will further educate doctors and enhance the care that they provide to their patients.
