\u201cA Feast for the Senses\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s Voices Chorus summer concert to benefit deaf children<\/p>\n

(Chapel Hill, NC) – Women’s Voices Chorus<\/b> (WVC) will perform a summer concert entitled \u201cA Feast for the Senses, Sunday, July 17 at 4 pm at United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Free admission, with donations accepted to benefit CASTLE, the Center for Acquisition of Spoken language Through Listening Enrichment, part of The Carolina Children’s Communicative Disorders Program (CCCDP). CASTLE is dedicated to providing quality auditory-oral early intervention and preschool services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. Featuring music from around the world, from classical to folk to gospel, all the songs celebrate the senses. As a special addition, two songs will be world premieres, both based on texts by famous poets: Lana Walter\u2019s \u201cOn His Blindness,\u201d text by John Milton, and Jayne Swank\u2019s \u201cI Never Saw a Moor,\u201d text by Emily Dickinson.<\/p>\n

WVC Artistic Director Allan Friedman comments, \u201cWVC is proud to be able to give back to the community each summer with our benefit concerts. This year we decided to team up with one of our singers, Lisa Park, who works with CASTLE. Using our gift of music to help these children seemed like a natural fit.\u201d Holly Teagle, director of the CCCDP, added, \u201cWith technology available today, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, deaf children can hear, and many of them enjoy music very much. We\u2019re pleased that WVC has partnered with us for this concert.\u201d<\/p>\n

About Women\u2019s Voices Chorus<\/b><\/p>\n

The Triangle’s only community-based classical chorus for sopranos and altos has received numerous rave reviews in its seventeen-year history, such as Classical Voice of North Carolina<\/i>: \u201c[A] top-flight ensemble [\u2026] one of the great artistic gems of the Triangle.\u201d Repertoire includes <\/b>classical sacred and secular music, folk song settings, spirituals, and a little bit of jazz, and half the repertoire is by women composers. About CASTLE<\/b><\/p>\n

The mission of the Center for Acquisition of Spoken language Through Listening Enrichment (CASTLE) is two-fold. CASTLE is dedicated to providing quality auditory-oral early intervention and preschool services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. CASTLE teaches, encourages, empowers, and supports the parents as the primary teachers of their young children, in order to promote healthy parent\/caregiver bonding and to maximize the amount of time a child spends in a language-rich environment.<\/p>\n

CASTLE provides this model program in order offer educational opportunities to professionals and university students in the form of workshops and in-services as well as practicum experience onsite in the field of oral deaf education.
