SUMMARY:AOE Webinar – Overcoming Self-Judgment with Self-Compassion: Lessons from the Emergency Department
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for the AOE Webinar – Overcoming Self-Judgment with Self-Compassion – Lessons from the Emergency Department with Dr. Al’ai Alvarez (Stanford University School of Medicine).\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\n\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUkf-2vrDgqGdzas0VQmITqiMSpFJQ4z8-W\n\n\n\n\nObjectives: \n\nExamine the role of name/blame/shame to loneliness\, isolation and burnout in Medicine.\nRecognize how self-compassion fosters a culture of caring for oneself and in medicine.\nValue self-care and boundary setting as part of self-compassion.\n\n  \nSummary: \n\n\n\nEmergency Medicine is one of the most stressful jobs out there. Emergency physicians must routinely make split-second decisions based on limited information\, switch tasks from one adverse scenario to another\, and field constant distractions and interruptions\, often on insufficient sleep. The emotional impact of medical errors and vicarious trauma has been compared to developing post-traumatic stress disorder. Fortunately\, studies have shown that cultivating self-compassion can help emergency physicians mitigate the negative impacts of stress and prevent burnout. In this webinar\, we will explore the science behind compassion and how it can foster a culture of caring in medicine and beyond. While we have no control over many of the stressors in our lives\, how we respond to them affects our outlook and well-being. Everyone\, including those outside of healthcare\, can benefit from these practical strategies on managing stress\, aiding recovery\, and dealing with the residue of trauma.

SUMMARY:AOE Project ACCESS Webinar – Using Programs of Assessment to Drive Educational Research
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the AOE Project ACCESS (A Carolina Community of Educational Scholarship Series) webinar “Using Programs of Assessment to Drive Educational Research” with Yoon Soo Park\, PhD (Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital) on Wednesday\, March 2\, 2022 at 12:00pm EST via Zoom.  \n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwpce6rqDgqH9HAQc7Z20muIiG5YJ10KU-y\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\nSummary: Assessing learners and providing meaningful feedback has been the cornerstone of educating physicians and health professionals across the continuum of training – this includes synthesizing information from a variety of assessments to make decisions on competence and entrustability. In this regard\, educational assessments administered as part of standard curriculum provides opportunities to drive educational research as well as improve the quality of education delivered in medical schools and in residency programs. This presentation presents collection of studies using programs of assessment from medical school (diagnostic reasoning assessment) and from residency training (clinical assessments) to demonstrate continuous quality improvement of assessments through educational research. Best practices for facilitating educational research will be discussed\, as well as educational research infrastructure needs and coproduction of scholarship with learners. \n\nYoon Soo Park\, PhD is Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and the inaugural Director of Health Professions Education Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital. \nPark’s experiences include both academic and industry settings\, with research interests and experiences across multiple disciplines in psychometrics\, biostatistics\, educational psychology\, and medicine. Park’s research agendas have focused on assessment methods in health professions education\, advancing the preparation of learners in clinical reasoning and measurement of competencies through validity studies. He has also contributed to psychometric methods\, focusing on statistical modeling of educational and psychological processes using latent class models and item response theory models. His psychometric research has contributed to methods that reduce statistical error for complex data structures. He has also actively engaged in interdisciplinary research in the social sciences\, collaborating with diverse researchers and practitioners across disciplines. \nPark is Chair of the Research in Medical Education (RIME) committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He is also Vice President and Member of Council for the American Educational Research Association (AERA)\, serving Division I: Education in the Professions

SUMMARY:AOE Webinar - Racial/Ethnic Biases in Clerkship Grading: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Racial/Ethnic Biases in Clerkship Grading: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” with Rodney Arthur\, Emma Marie Astrike-Davis\, Colin Godwin\, Michelle Ikoma\, Mindy McKinney\, and Bao-Tran Parker on Wednesday\, January 26th\, 2022\, 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST via Zoom.  \n  \nRegistration \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYld-Cspz0pG9KTyhtwO3_pZIVQi_CCx6jO\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email\, with links to add to your personal calendars. \n  \nSummary   \nAfter pilot data from the UNC Class of 2019 demonstrated strong racial/ethnic disparities in clerkship grades (White students comprised 60% of the class but 73% of the top quartile)\, we undertook a meta-analysis of racial/ethnic biases in clerkship grading. This meta-analysis demonstrated strong racial/ethnic biases in clinical evaluations\, standardized tests\, and overall clerkship grades that did not fully reduce after introducing controlling factors\, implying the existence of structural racism – likely mediated by stereotype threat and implicit or explicit biases – in clerkship grading. We contextualize the effects of these significant disparities in clerkship grading by discussing downstream disparities in AOA honors society eligibility and residency match success\, both of which threaten the safety and academic progression of our students and\, in turn\, threaten patients through the deprivation of identity-concordant care in the most competitive residency fields. We will also provide general background on ways peer medical schools have combated these disparities\, including Pass/Fail grading and reducing the influence of shelf exams\, in anticipation of the formation of our Task Force on Competency Based Grading.   \n   \nEducational Objectives  \n\nDescribe the direction and magnitude of structural racism in clerkship grading \nQuantify the magnitude of the downstream effects from racial/ethnic disparities in clerkship grading \nDescribe structural racism in the context of clerkship grading \nDefine stereotype threat and recognize how it affects student learning and accreditation  \nDefine implicit bias and recognize how it affects student learning and accreditation  \nDescribe the risks/benefits of Pass/Fail clerkship grading and halting medical student induction into AOA
