SUMMARY:Using Competency-Based Assessments to Coach Professional Development in Pre-Clerkship Trainees
DESCRIPTION:Register in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0rdO2qrzkqGdUfVObu3xiXIs5EnqtuT74Z \n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. If you are unable to attend the event\, it will be recorded and stored on our Workshop Recordings page. \n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\nHealth professionals require skills and attitudes beyond medical knowledge and pre-clerkship faculty play an early role in developing these attributes in students. However\, because of the heavy focus on medical knowledge during pre-clerkship training\, programs often struggle to incorporate experiences and assessments that prepare students for all aspects of clinical work. One approach to addressing this issue is to incorporate competency-based assessment schemes into the pre-clerkship curriculum that are compatible with established small group learning modalities. While maintaining the importance of medical knowledge\, competency-based assessment strategies allow a more holistic view of student development and can be used to coach learners in a variety of domains\, such as practice-based learning and improvement\, systems-based practice\, interpersonal skills and communication\, and professionalism. They also provide students with rich feedback across all aspects of their performance and establish a roadmap that encourages learner development and sustainability. \nThis interactive focus session will provide practical information and a framework that participants can use to implement milestone-based assessment strategies that include multiple competency domains at their institutions. After completing this focus session\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe qualitative formats of assessment and how they can be used to equip students with a diverse set of competencies during pre-clerkship medical education.\nDesign different team-based learning environments that can be used to observe student behavior.\nDiscuss how feedback from these sessions can be used to identify previously undetected competency challenges and allow opportunities for coaching and remediation before students enter the clinical workplace.\nDevelop standardized milestone-based competency language for assessing student performance.\n\n\n\n\n\nNeil Osheroff\, PhD\n\nDr. Osheroff received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Northwestern University and was a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is currently a Professor of Biochemistry and Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and holds the John G. Coniglio Chair in Biochemistry. Dr. Osheroff directs a research laboratory that has made seminal contributions to our understanding of how enzymes\, known as topoisomerases function\, regulate the topological state of DNA and serve as targets for several widely prescribed anticancer and antibacterial drugs. He also directs the School of Medicine Academy for Excellence in Education and chairs the Master Science Teacher group. \n\nDr. Osheroff has received awards for mentoring\, teaching\, curricular design\, educational leadership and service\, and promoting diversity and inclusion. He was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018 and received the IAMSE Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship in 2019. He has published over 260 papers and has presented more than 300 scientific and educational talks in 32 different countries. (Read more about Dr. Osheroff)

SUMMARY:Webinar - Transforming Academic Activities into Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, August 18\, 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST for the first virtual faculty exchange webinar “Transforming Academic Activities into Scholarship” with Jeannine Nonaillada\, PhD\, OTR/L\, BCG\, FAOTA from the New York University Long Island School of Medicine. \nRegister Now\nMeeting link will be emailed to you prior to the event AND available here: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/95137871420?pwd=K3hPZE15U2MzU2Rlc0ZyUUV0UXVxdz09  \n\nSummary \nIn the busy clinical setting\, many physicians find it difficult to engage in scholarly activity\, especially related to academic activities. Increased institutional productivity demands and the pressures of the ticking clock place hardships on many physicians whose primary responsibility is to provide clinical care. Balancing other life roles can also make it challenging to commit to ongoing professional development activities. \nIn order to be perceived as leaders in medical education among our students as well as colleagues\, it is essential that physicians produce scholarly activities demonstrating lifelong learning and contributing to our clinical knowledge base. \n\nLearning Objectives: \nAt the end of this session\, you will be able to: \n1. Identify the essential components of scholarship in academic education \n2. Give examples of known or perceived barriers to your own scholarly activities \n3. Apply components of scholarship to your own work (planned or in progress) as a physician educator \n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\n\nDr. Nonaillada has been an occupational therapist since 2001\, and is 1 of 24 occupational therapists nationally to hold Board Certification in Gerontology from the American Occupational Therapy Association. \nShe has provided clinical care along the continuum in acute\, sub-acute\, and outpatient rehabilitation\, as well as acute care and oncology settings. She has been an invited speaker and writer on the topic of falls prevention\, and has held previous leadership roles in patient safety and quality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Nonaillada also has an earned research doctorate in social work with a concentration in gerontology\, where she studied the efficacy of geriatrics education for healthcare providers and hospital staff on knowledge\, attitudes and communication with older adults\, and shared decision-making with older adults with cancer. She is active in many national organizations\, serving as a volunteer leader\, manuscript and abstract reviewer\, and advocate. Dr. Nonaillada joined NYU Winthrop in 2016\, where she combined her passion for teaching effective clinical education and promoting scholarly advancement of healthcare providers in the hospital setting.

Medicine\, Diversity\, and Practicing in a Rapidly Changing Landscape \nPhysicians and health care providers have always been about “making it better\,” whether that involves bandaging wounds\, researching cures for diseases\, or bringing compassion and care to anyone – and everyone – in need. But is it possible that sometimes physicians and health care providers make it worse? In this presentation\, we’ll look at how a focus on addressing diversity and inclusion – including microaggressions and implicit bias – is changing our social interactions\, including those involving patients\, family members\, community members\, and other providers. Whether you’re new to these ideas or already thinking about diversity and inclusion\, this presentation will help you consider how to keep making it better\, even in this rapidly changing society. \n  \n \nAnne Phibbs\, PhD is Founder and President of Strategic Diversity Initiatives and brings over 25 years’ experience helping organizations advance their equity\, diversity\, and inclusion goals.  Anne has extensive experience in training\, teaching\, curriculum development\, and training of trainers\, and has delivered workshops and classes to participants in corporate\, government\, higher education\, nonprofit\, healthcare\, and faith community settings.  Anne served as GLBT Student Services Director at Metropolitan State University\, and at the University of Minnesota she served as Director of the GLBTA Programs Office and Director of Education in the Office for Equity and Diversity.  Anne built a successful diversity and inclusion leadership program at the University of Minnesota\, with a focus on emotional intelligence (EI)\, and she is an EI Practitioner certified in the EQ-i2.0 and EQ360 method.  Anne earned her PhD in Philosophy and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota and lives in Minneapolis.

But the influence we have in each other’s lives becomes that much more powerful when we act as allies to those with marginalized identities. In this interactive workshop\, we’ll address what it means to act as an ally. As our classes become increasingly diverse\, medical schools will need allies at every point of a student’s journey – from learning in the classroom and lab to residencies\, student groups and interacting with staff. Whatever your role\, you can choose to be part of an institutional effort to address bias\, increase inclusion\, and build community.
