SUMMARY:AI in Research: Journey\, Insights\, and Practical Workshop with Professor Jose Penades\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a school-wide event featuring Professor Jose R. Penadès\, Chair in Microbiology at Imperial College London and an internationally recognized expert in bacterial evolution and antimicrobial resistance. Professor Penadès will share his journey integrating artificial intelligence into his research\, including a groundbreaking collaboration with Google’s AI “co-scientist\,” which replicated nearly a decade of his team’s research on superbug resistance in just two days\, confirming findings and generating new hypotheses. \n This session will be followed by an interactive\, hands-on workshop in which participants will provide a scenario\, shared dataset\, or research problem to actively explore and apply AI-driven approaches. DESCRIPTION:Join the University Ombuds Office for a presentation and discussion of conflict in the workplace.\nThis workshop will provide attendees with resources and tools to approach conflict situations as opportunities for professional development and personal growth. \nFALD Professional Development Series and the Office of the Dean Presents welcomes you to join us for lunch and a presentation presented by the University Ombuds Office. \n\n\nLearn how to\n\nGain a working definition of conflict and be introduced to strategies for decreasing the likelihood of escalated conflict;\nAnalyze the role of leaders in engaging workplace conflict constructively; and\nIncrease familiarity with the Ombuds Office as a supportive resource for navigating challenging situations\n\n  \n\nWait List Registration \nThis event is at capacity. She supports efforts to advance the mission of the University and its goal of being a great public university that welcomes and values all members of the campus community and treats everyone with respect\, fairness\, and kindness. \nDawn has devoted her professional life to helping individuals and organizations develop constructive approaches to challenging situations. Before joining Carolina\, Dawn served as a consultant Ombuds at Shell Oil Company\, University Ombudsman at Binghamton University (a campus of the State University of New York)\, an alternative dispute resolution administrator and law clerk for the United States Federal Court and an attorney working in the public interest. \nDawn earned her B.S. from Georgetown University and her J.D. from New York University School of Law. She also holds a certificate in dispute resolution from the Straus Institute at Pepperdine University School of Law. \n  \n \nJoshua Canzona joins Carolina as Associate Ombuds after three years of service as the founding ombudsman at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. \nBorn and raised in rural North Carolina\, Josh is proud to serve a university committed to enhancing the quality of life for communities across the state through education\, research\, and service. \nJosh taught public high school in Raleigh before working in higher education for the last decade in a variety of staff\, faculty\, and administrator roles. DESCRIPTION:The Office of Faculty Affairs & Leadership Development invites you to our annual New Faculty Orientation on October 11th from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM.  Registration begins at 7:30 AM.  Please complete this form to submit your RSVP by October 1\, 2018.  All faculty with a start date of October 30\, 2017 and those who did not attend last year’s session are highly encouraged to attend. \nThe goal of the orientation is to provide new faculty with an overview of the institution and to help launch a successful career at the UNC School of Medicine. The half-day orientation covers topics essential to all new faculty\, and it features the opportunity to meet with other faculty and leaders from across the School of Medicine and Health Care System. \nPlease note that this is different than the Office of Human Resources orientation as our session does not cover new hire paperwork\, benefits\, etc. Instead\, our aim is to connect you with key resources and points of contact. \nPlease contact Morgan Resnick-Kahle at morgan_resnick-kahle@med.unc.edu with any questions or concerns.
