SUMMARY:Making Us Tar Heel Stronger: Nutritional Strategies to Optimize Cognitive and Physical Performance
DESCRIPTION:As faculty\, we all want to be mentally sharp and efficient and to retain information effectively. In addition to physical exhaustion\, these abilities can be compromised by poor nutrition and hydration\, particularly in the face of heavy workloads\, long work hours\, high stress\, and sleep deprivation. There is evidence that certain nutritional strategies can mitigate fatigue and improve our cognitive and physical performance. This talk briefly overviews the latest research on practical nutritional strategies that can help improve cognitive performance in professionals with high cognitive demands. This Grand Rounds highlights the UNC Health Wellness Week\, January 29th through February 2nd\, 2024. \nLearn About\n\n     Ways dietary factors affect short and long-term cognitive and physical performance\n     Ways circadian rhythm disruption\, stress\, sleep deprivation\, and food environments affect our food choices\n     Evidence-based nutritional strategies to overcome these challenges and optimize cognitive performance\n\n  \n\nRegister Now! \nThis is a hybrid event. \n \n \nSpeaker\nMaryam S. Makowski\, Ph.D.\, NBC-HWC\, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, the Associate Director of Scholarship and Health Promotion of the Stanford Medicine WellMD & WellPhD\, and a physician coach at Stanford University. \nDr. Makowski is a nutrition scientist and a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. The focus of her nutrition research is examining the effects of micro- and macro-nutrients\, meal composition\, and timing on cognitive function\, mood\, mental sharpness\, and eating behaviors of professionals with high cognitive and physical demands\, in particular physicians. As a coach\, Maryam uses personalized evidence-based strategies to support her clients in achieving their best. \nPrior to joining Stanford\, she served as an advisor to Air Canada rouge pilots and cabin crew on optimal nutrition for fatigue mitigation. Throughout her career\, she has authored many highly cited scientific papers on nutrition and physician well-being.
