\"\"Save the date for the first Wellness Scholarship Expo on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 3:00-4:00PM at the Koury Oral Health Sciences building (Mainstreet lobby).<\/strong>\u00a0 The Scholarship Expo will showcase the work of faculty, staff, trainees and students who are exploring innovative solutions to improve wellness at UNC.<\/p>\n

Following the Scholarship Expo will be a visiting professor talk with Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD from 4:00-5:00PM in Kirkland Auditorium (Koury Oral Health Sciences building).<\/strong> Read more about Dr. Ofri and her talk “Surviving Medicine in the 21st Century” below.\u00a0 After the talk, there will be a reception and book-signing from 5:00-6:00PM with Dr. Ofri.<\/strong>\u00a0 Books will be available to purchase onsite.<\/p>\n

Join us for the other 2019 School of Medicine Wellness Week events, sponsored by the Office of Faculty Affairs & Leadership Development and the School of Medicine Well-Being Committee. There will be a variety of events throughout the week of November 18th<\/sup>\u201422nd<\/sup>, all of which can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, is a physician at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and a faculty member of NYU School of Medicine. She writes about medicine and the doctor-patient connection for the New York Times<\/em>, Slate Magazine<\/em>, and other publications. Dr. Ofri is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Bellevue Literary Review<\/a>, the first literary journal to arise from a medical setting.\u00a0 She\u00a0is the author of a collection of\u00a0books about the world of medicine, including \u201cWhat Patients Say, What Doctors Hear\u201d, \u201cWhat Doctors Feel\u201d, and \u201cMedicine in Translation: Journeys with My Patients\u201d. Her talk, Surviving Medicine in the 21st Century is on “inspiration in medicine: disillusionment in medicine feels like it is reaching epidemic proportions. Doctors say they would never choose the field if they had to do it all over again. Medical error and burnout seem to be everywhere. But it might be too soon to close the book on the medical profession. This presentation examines the impact of disillusionment, highlighting strategies for re-engaging doctors, combating burnout, and thriving in the new era of medicine.”<\/p>\n
