UNIVERSITY TRACK RESIDENT

Hi party people! My name is Joy, short for “JOYcelyn.” I am from Spartanburg, SC. For my undergraduate career, I attended Clemson University, where I obtained a B.S. in Biological Sciences. After the conferral of my Bachelor’s Degree, I left the upstate and moseyed on down to the coast, where I attended the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine in Charleston, SC. For much of medical school, I was certain I would become a Pediatrician, drawn to the idea of seeing cute, bouncy babies all day. However, once I started my Pediatrics rotation, I realized I was wrong. I missed seeing adult patients. I also thoroughly enjoyed delivering babies and helping out in the women’s health clinic during my OB/GYN rotation. I grappled with finalizing my specialty choice for months, but then I entered the world of Family Medicine.  When I did my Family Medicine rotation, I realized I could have everything I enjoyed in as big or small a dose as I wanted. Casually glancing at my family doctor’s UNC degree, led me to apply to the UNC Family Medicine Residency Program. And I am certainly glad that I did.

My professional interests include pediatrics, women’s health, and increasing diversity within medicine. In my free time I definitely enjoy shopping, watching movies, and hanging out with friends and family. Whenever possible, I also enjoy making desserts and crafting.
