Louw Coe

Catherine Louw Coe, MD
University of Washington

Originally from South Africa, my family moved to Seattle when I was nine and I have happily called it home since then. I attended the University of Washington for undergrad where I graduated with degrees in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Biochemistry. I discovered medicine as a possible career option during a study abroad trip and loved the perfect harmony between science and caring for people. I also attended the University of Washington for medical school, where I was inspired by a family physician to pursue family medicine. I was amazed by the wealth of knowledge necessary to care for people of all ages, in addition to the impact we can make on health of society as a whole.

UNC was my first interview of the season, and I was blown away by the support of the faculty, attention to quality improvement, and how much fun the residents seemed to be having. Each day I am learning something new about the program that I love. I enjoy the diverse patient population we take care of and the strong presence the department has both within Graduate Medical Education at UNC, in addition to the medical school. I am so excited to be a part of this program, which I feel has a perfect balance between academic rigor and a supportive community.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Ryan, exploring the Triangle area. We love the American Tobacco Trail and you can often find us running or riding our bikes on it. I also enjoy cooking, baking and traveling to new places. Lastly, I love Broadway musicals and can’t wait for the upcoming season at the Durham Performing Arts Center, which showcases the newest shows from Broadway in a brand new theater. I feel so lucky to be at UNC for residency and am excited for what the future holds.
