Resident Physician

Personal Statement

Hi! My name is Nathan Sison. I grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as part of a family deep rooted in the culture of New Orleans just down the road. I moved west to Texas for undergrad at UT Austin where I majored in anthropology with a focus on Paleo-Indian archaeology and Ancient Greek. There was some hard science and thoughts of medicine somewhere in there too.

I was fortunate after college to be accepted to Teach for America in my home state of Mississippi, thereby avoiding a jobless stretch while doing something good for my community. I taught high school science and grew immensely in those couple of years. I came back to medicine after teaching so that I could touch as many lives as possible in as many ways as possible. Family Medicine gradually revealed itself as the perfect manifestation of these career goals during medical school.

I am proud to a part of the family medicine residency program at UNC Chapel Hill. I was drawn here by the promise of being part of an innovative and restless vision for primary care’s future. While I have found just that, I have also discovered excellent teaching, abundant resources, and supportive, fantastic people.
