Local Food Supporting Local Healthcare: Innovative Models

NC Food and Health pic

The NC Food & Health Care Intersections Group is made up of representatives from our local universities, NC Government agencies, non-profits, and for-profits.The organization’s goal is to find better way to integrate medical care and improve food access through production, distribution, and education (about food and food preparation) with existing NC sustainable farming and food program initiatives to achieve health outcomes for children and persons with chronic disease.

This is a great opportunity for health organizations, business leaders and policy makers to learn and potentially explore the tremendous power of these new models. For example, on a national level an older study estimated that improved use of healthy food could prevent $71 billion per year in medical costs, lost productivity, and premature deaths. Furthermore, the use of local healthy food would strengthen our farming communities.
