UNC Family Medicine is proud to serve North Carolina’s LGBTQIA+ communities. We seek to create a safe, welcoming environment wherein each of our patients feels embraced and validated in their sexual orientation and gender identity. We offer a number of primary care services for LGBTQIA+ folks living in North Carolina, including:

  • Gender-affirming care: Many of our resident and faculty clinicians prescribe gender-affirming hormone therapy for Transgender and Gender-nonconforming (TGNC) patients. We may also assist with referrals for gender-affirming surgery and other services.
  • Sexual health and wellness: We offer counseling on safer sex practices, in addition to testing, prevention, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, including Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.
  • Mental health: You can talk about the diagnosis and management of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions with a provider who is sensitive to the potential experiences and needs of LGBTQIA+ folks.
  • Preventive care: We offer screening for conditions like cervical and colon cancer, in addition to management of high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and other chronic conditions, from primary care providers who are experienced in caring for the LGBTQIA+ community.

If you are interested in hearing more about any of these services or would like to schedule an appointment with a primary care provider experienced in caring for LGBTQIA+ folks, please email familymedicine@med.unc.edu or call (984) 974-4246.

You can also find our residents and faculty at health fairs, pride celebrations, and other community events throughout the Triangle area. Stay tuned to this page for more information on where we’ll be next!
