She was \u201csick and tired\u201d of being held captive by her cigarette addiction and embarrassed when her patients and friends smelled cigarette smoke on her.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Nancy saw an article in the Employee News about a free program for UNC Health Care\u00a0employees who want to quit tobacco. Nancy set up an appointment to meet with Barbara Silver, a Tobacco Treatment Specialist.\u00a0They first met in person at the\u00a0UNC Hospice Inpatient Unit, where Nancy works. She was a bit skeptical because cigarettes had been her \u201cfriend\u201d for over 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>After Nancy\u00a0and Barbara discussed\u00a0options for tobacco cessation medications, they agreed that Varenicline (Chantix) was the best option. In addition to the medication, they discussed various strategies for Nancy to use during the times of day when she craves cigarettes. Nancy wanted to replace her tobacco use with healthy behaviors!<\/p>\n<p>Nancy has been tobacco free since August and reports many benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breathing easy without coughing,<\/li>\n<li>No shortness of breath,<\/li>\n<li>No smell in her car or on her clothes,<\/li>\n<li>More free time to do other things, and<\/li>\n<li>More than $500 saved from not buying cigarettes!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She realizes now that cigarettes weren\u2019t really her friend because a friend wouldn\u2019t cost you so much money and health.<\/p>\n<p><em>To learn more about the FREE Tobacco Free Tarheels program,\u00a0email<a href=\"mailto:barbara_silver@med.unc.edu\">\u00a0barbara_silver@med.unc.edu<\/a>, or call\/text 919-904-4848.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Nancy DePalma found herself driving to the store over icy roads to buy cigarettes,\u00a0or\u00a0smoking butts she found in her ashtrays, she realized she had a problem.
