What\u2019s up peeps! I am from the great, Clutch City, Houston (repping for the Rockets, Texans, and Astros!). I received a BS in business management from the University of Texas at San Antonio (Go ROADRUNNERS!). During that time I was fortunate to be a part of the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) in Texas. JAMP exposed underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged students to opportunities in medicine that they might not have otherwise had. Though I had an idea that I wanted to be a doctor in high school it was my experience with JAMP that helped to solidify my commitment.<\/p>\n
I later went to Texas A&M (Go Aggies!) for both my masters in business administration and medical degree. While in medical school I was heavily involved with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). \u00a0SNMA is a national student run organization dedicated to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of marginalized communities, and increasing cultural competency and social consciousness among physicians. \u00a0My work with SNMA taught me the importance of leadership and mentorship, but more importantly my role in addressing the health disparities that unfortunately plague our healthcare system.<\/p>\n
Being that I had lived in Texas all of my life, I decided that residency was the perfect opportunity for me to explore living in another state. I never thought I would find myself in North Carolina but after interviewing at UNC, I knew it was the place for me. Aside from being a highly reputable program with a robust and innovative curriculum to prepare rock-solid, well rounded family doctors in any environment, I appreciated UNC\u2019s focus and intentional supporting of diversity and inclusion. In addition, the warm and welcoming embrace from the amazing faculty and residents was icing on the cake.<\/p>\n
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends; \u00a0listening to deep house and jazz-hop instrumentals on youtube, and gospel, r&b, hip-hop, & neo-soul music; shower singing and mirror dancing (I was in the entertainment industry in my former life); spending time with my charming, loving, black lab Jackson; ALL THINGS FOOD (it is the way to my heart!). I am looking forward discovering all that the triangle has to offer!<\/p>\n
Interests: academic and community medicine, caring for underserved populations, obstetrics and women\u2019s health, quality improvement, leadership in healthcare, and advocacy.<\/p>\n
