Hello and welcome to our Tar Heel family!<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been a wandering nomad most of my life. Originally from China, I\u2019ve lived in eight other states before moving to North Carolina, which I now proudly call home. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University in 2008 with a degree in Behavioral Biology, I burned my MCAT books, bought a contraband version of Rosetta Stone Spanish, and moved to Ecuador for a year to work as the Health Program Director for a fabulous NGO, Manna Project International. This reaffirmed my passions for working with less privileged populations in a primary care setting with a focus on public health, integrative medicine, and grassroots community development.\u00a0I then moved to Los Angeles to be with my then boyfriend\/future husband and worked a bunch of super random jobs before pursuing an MPH in Global Health Leadership at the University of Southern California and medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. During this time, I had the privilege of doing research\u00a0in the Congo with Operation Smile, conducting health education workshops in Nicaragua, and completing a clinical rotation in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n
When Cristy Page told our group on interview day that if we came here we would be joining a big family, she meant every word of it. I feel so supported here by my colleagues, faculty and staff who are also very close friends and mentors. I specifically searched for programs with a strong emphasis on underserved care, obstetrical training, and global health leadership\/advocacy opportunities. UNC provides all of this and more. As\u00a0a member of the National Health Service Corps, having the unique opportunity to train in the oldest and most established FQHC in the state at Prospect Hill pretty much sealed the deal for me. Simply put, I love it here.
