Biographical Information<\/h2>\n

Erin P. Fraher, PhD, MPP, is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as Deputy Director for Policy and Director of the Program on Health Workforce Research & Policy at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Dr. Fraher\u2019s research on the training, regulation, and payment of the nation\u2019s health workforce has been used by state and federal policy makers in their efforts to address workforce shortages, particularly in rural and underserved communities. She is often called upon to brief Congressional and Senate staff and members, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, state governors, state legislatures, health systems and other public and private sector leaders on a wide range of emerging health workforce topics. She has served as an expert advisor to the National Academy of Medicine in multiple roles, serving on the planning committee, as a workshop co-chair, as a speaker on various workforce topics, and as a reviewer of a NAM report. Dr. Fraher is the immediate past Chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) which is charged with advising the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Congress on workforce trends, training issues, and financing.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fraher was also recently appointed to the 2024 Congressional Budget Office\u2019s Panel of Health Advisors. The CBO hosts an annual meeting to discuss important and emerging health care issues and also engages with advisors throughout the year, drawing on their advice in the preparation of CBO studies and cost estimates.<\/p>\n

Areas of Interest<\/h2>\n

Dr. Fraher\u2019s research focuses on graduate medical education, interprofessional teams in new models of care, developing rigorous methodologies to project how many health workers will be needed under different possible \u201cfutures,\u201d and using life course theory to better understand health professionals\u2019 career trajectories.<\/p>\n
