Do not schedule your most desired program first.\u00a0 Rather, schedule one or two interviews to become familiar with the process<\/li>\n<li>Letters of Recommendation:\u00a0 following up with those who have not sent them in! Make sure that programs have received the letters, too.<\/li>\n<li>Meet with advisor to review your list of programs to be interviewed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #ff0000\"><strong>September<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Have your ERAS materials completed by this deadline!\u00a0 Residency programs will access them and contact you for interviews quickly!<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>November &#8211; January,<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interview with programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>January before graduation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact advisor to discuss program rankings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>February before graduation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn in Rank List to Dean&#8217;s Office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>March before graduation and Match Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>If you have not matched<\/em>, you will be notified by e-mail by ERAS on Monday of Match Week. They will also contact the Dean&#8217;s Office.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t panic.\u00a0 Contact your advisor and they will work with you to identify unfilled family medicine residency programs.\u00a0\u00a0 Unmatched students will be able to submit supplementary applications for unfilled programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-2\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h4 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-2\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-2\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-2\">\n                Guidelines for Ranking Residency Programs            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h4>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p>The NRMP matches applicants and programs in favor of the students.\u00a0 Students get their highest ranked programs when the programs rank them highly; residency programs do <u>not<\/u> get their highest choices when students have ranked other programs higher.\u00a0 Given that mechanism, it follows that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rank your first choice first, even if you feel your chances of matching are low.<\/li>\n<li>List seven to ten programs, even if you are confident of your top three. If your academic record is uneven, you may want to list more than ten.<\/li>\n<li>Consider having a &#8220;safety&#8221; program ranked at the bottom. Not matching is problematic, even though there are usually good programs which do not fill.<\/li>\n<li>DO NOT rank a program that you really <strong>do not<\/strong> want to go to. You break a legal contract if you do not attend a program you matched, and it is foolish to go where you would be unhappy.\u00a0 You are better off <u>NOT<\/u> matching and going through the SOAP (Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program) process for a spot.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-3\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h4 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-3\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-3\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-3\">\n                Guidelines for Fourth-Year Electives for Students Considering Family Medicine Residency Programs            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h4>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-3\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p>Use fourth year rotations to your educational advantage!\u00a0 The Individualization Phase is a &#8220;choose your own adventure&#8221; that gives you more <strong>opportunities to shine while filling in gaps<\/strong> in your clinical education.\u00a0 While it might be tempting to register for the minimum number of electives you need to graduate, remember this is your last opportunity to choose from a broad range of clinical rotations and <strong>garner letters of recommendation<\/strong>.\u00a0 Your Individualization Phase experiences will be the freshest and <strong>most visible to residency programs to which you apply<\/strong>.\u00a0 Craft a 4th year that shows the kind of residency you would be attracted to and the kind of physician you seek to become.\u00a0 The <strong>courses you choose for blocks 1-4 are especially important<\/strong> because they will be reflected in your ERAS application on your transcript and MSPE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking Electives<\/strong>:\u00a0 Electives can fill gaps in knowledge and skills, but can also be used to feed a passion; explore an area of specialization within primary care, such as geriatrics or substance abuse; and give you some cool experiences that can make great material for personal statements and stories you will need for residency interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Browse the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/woodland.med.unc.edu\/electivesbook\/\">CATALOG<\/a><\/strong> for FMME courses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Family Medicine is broad in scope, filled with clinical, research, and outreach opportunities.\u00a0 The Career Advising program will explore these with you and provide tools and connections that can advance your journey towards residency. \u00a0Whether Family Medicine is your primary plan or your parallel plan, Career Advising can help focus your efforts.
