The paper, published in BMJ Open, analyzed results from the 2017 North Carolina Youth Tobacco Survey, which surveyed over 2,800 high school students.<\/p>\n<p>Limited prior research has shown that some adolescents use e-cigarette devices to vape cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research expands and builds upon this data by showing how many high school youth tobacco in North Carolina are vaping marijuana and what other tobacco products students are regularly using in addition to vaping cannabis,\u201d says Sarah Kowitt, PhD, UNC Family Medicine post-doctoral researcher and first author on the paper.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the greatest correlation was among water pipe, cigar, and e-cigarette users, with 43% of water pipe users, 35% of cigar users, and 29% of e-cigarette users having vaped cannabis<\/li>\n<li>Vaping cannabis was more common among male students than female students, and prevalence increased with grade-level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese findings provide evidence that large numbers of high school students who use tobacco products have vaped cannabis,\u201d says Adam Goldstein, MD, MPH, Director of UNC Tobacco Intervention Programs and senior author on the paper. \u201cUsing current North Carolina enrollment figures, the findings suggest that over 46,000 high school students across the state have vaped cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8328\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 210px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"An image of Adam Goldstein, MD, MPH\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-1024x1536.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-1365x2048.jpeg 1365w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-600x900.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-341x512.jpeg 341w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2018\/03\/image2-5-scaled.jpeg 1706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Adam Goldstein, MD, MPH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Qualities of non-combustible forms of cannabis (such as the potential flavors, no smell of smoke, lower harm perceptions) may attract youth who would otherwise not use cannabis, similar to how e-cigarettes \u2013 especially Juul products \u2013 have attracted youth to inhaling nicotine products, youth who would otherwise never have started smoking or exposing themselves to nicotine.<\/p>\n<p>As with e-cigarettes, much more research is needed about the harms and benefits of non-combustible forms of cannabis and the effects of vaporized cannabis use, especially among adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTobacco control policies targeting adolescents\u2014such as communication campaigns, age 21 buy laws, and smoke-free laws\u2014must focus not only on e-cigarettes, but also the use of e-cigarettes to vape substances other than nicotine,\u201d says Kowitt.<\/p>\n<p>Kowitt and Goldstein plan to re-assess prevalence of vaping cannabis in the 2019 North Carolina Youth Tobacco Survey. In the meantime, increased educational efforts are needed to educate students about the impact of vaping cannabis and use of multiple tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at UNC School of Medicine found almost one in ten North Carolina adolescents reported ever vaping cannabis or marijuana.
