The Pragmatic Evaluation of Events and Benefits of Lipid-Lowering in Older Adults, or PREVENTABLE trial, is expected to receive $90 million total in funding.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7172\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 194px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/454\/2014\/12\/Kistler-2017-Choice-1-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"doc FMC researcher profile\" width=\"184\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Chrissy Kistler MD, MASc<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trial will evaluate whether statins, or cholesterol-lowering drugs, can help prevent dementia and disability in adults over 75. It will also investigate whether statins can help against heart attacks and other cardiovascular-related deaths.<\/p>\n<p>It will be the first major study of its kind, involving 20,000 participants from 60 hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kistler serves as an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, with a focus on geriatric care. All four principal investigators on the trial hail from North Carolina institutions: Duke Medical Center and Wake Forest School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full release from NIH <a
