In 1996, the Gene Therapy Center was formed with the objective of recruiting new faculty, developing novel gene delivery systems and executing translational research for a patient population affected by genetic disorders. Enabling research clinicians to bring therapies from the bench to the bedside was the primary focus for forming a center specifically related to gene therapy. Access to the sequence and emerging annotation of the entire human genome provides enormous potential for the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of human disease. The potential identification of all candidate genes responsible for the over 5,000 genetic disorders should result in an onslaught of research activity in this arena over the next 5-10 years. Our long-term goal is to realize the capacity to develop, refine and test gene-based therapies in the shortest possible time frame that is compatible with patient safety.

We are so thankful for your generous gift. Our center is entirely grant supported; therefore, there is no permanent source of funding available to us. Your much needed donation will enable us to make real advances toward our goal of bringing laboratory research into the clinical world. At present, our research centers on the following genetic disorders: cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, Rett syndrome, Canavan disease, epilepsy, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AAT), hemophilia, San Filippo disease, ocular gene therapy, giant axon neuropathy (GAN), Batten disease, ALS, parkinsons, alzheimer’s, other rare genetic disorders and cancer.

Donations are tax deductible
