{"id":2368,"date":"2023-07-18T17:00:35","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T21:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/abgs\/?page_id=2368"},"modified":"2023-09-07T13:17:26","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T17:17:26","slug":"about-the-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/abgs\/about-us\/about-the-project\/","title":{"rendered":"About the Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\"> <div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">What is Age-Based Genomic Screening (ABGS)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ABGS is a new approach to introducing genetic sequencing into routine healthcare for young healthy children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ABGS would target specific genes that are known to cause a specific disease rather than sequencing more than 20,000 genes in the human genome.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The types of genetic diseases selected for screening are referred to as \u201cactionable\u201d because they have proven medical treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ABGS only screens for actionable conditions that are appropriate for the age of the child.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div> <div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">What are the goals of the ABGS project?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Combining evidence and expert opinion to determine what genetic conditions to add for screening through childhood<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Understanding what parents, health care providers, and communities consider barriers to participating in ABGS and removing those roadblocks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Piloting a research study in diverse clinics in NC to learn about the effectiveness and health equity of ABGS\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">What makes ABGS different from current Newborn Screening (NBS)?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Current public health screening in children is centered around <a style=\"color: #007fae;\" href=\"https:\/\/newbornscreening.hrsa.gov\/\">Newborn Screening (NBS<\/a>) of babies right after they are born. Health screening in general looks for people with a disease, or an increased chance of developing a disease, who have not developed symptoms yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All babies in the US are screened at birth for rare but serious genetic conditions that can cause major health problems and\/or death if not detected and treated early. <a style=\"color: #007fae;\" href=\"https:\/\/nbstrn.org\/tools\/nbs-vr\">Each state decides which genetic conditions to screen for,<\/a> with most states screening for 50-60 conditions.\u00a0The state laboratory receives a blood sample from the baby, typically from a heel stick,f to run tests on the blood to determine if a condition is present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Screening has been very successful\u00a0in the United States because it identifies babies who need early treatment in time to receive an intervention.\u00a0 Without this timely action, these babies would eventually experience major health issues and possibly a limited lifespan.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/abgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1363\/2023\/08\/Venn-Diagram-From-About-Our-Project-Page57-e1692986142271.jpg\" class=\" img-thumbnail oscitas-bootstrap-container \">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"border-goals\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The goal of ABGS is to provide screening for dozens of additional genetic conditions that are not currently included in NBS. ABGS is unique because instead of screening for every condition in newborn babies, it would screen at different ages when treatment options would be most effective to help treat or even prevent these genetic conditions from developing symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">How does ABGS know what parents want for their children?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ABGS project is striving for diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of research and want to make sure that genomic medicine research benefits all people. Community engagement is crucial to ABGS since we want to learn what parents think of genomic screening for healthy children and, specifically, what they think about the ABGS approach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Community Research Board (CRB) members are part of the research team and provide insight and guidance on many aspects of this project from a parental and community perspective.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Meet the Community Research Board (CRB)!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><div class=\"col-lg-7 col-md-7 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diverse parents, caregivers, and community members who represent their different backgrounds, perspectives, and communities on the ABGS project to ensure that it is accessible and engaging for all families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Community-based researchers who contribute to the research project throughout its lifespan, including writing scientific papers and abstracts and co-developing research materials with the UNC researchers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Research partners who meet with the UNC research team via Zoom and in-person and participate in community engagement events.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Critically important contributors to building awareness and genetic health literacy and developing meaningful and trusting relationships with local
