Dr. Laura Milko earned her B.S. in Biology from Howard University in 2000, and her Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans in Conservation Biology in 2007. Her postdoctoral research in molecular ecology and population genetics in Nick Haddad’s lab at North Carolina State University ultimately led to her interest in human molecular genetics and her role in the Berg Lab.

Currently, Laura is the Executive Director of the Expert Curation and EHR Integration ‘ECEI’ U41 grant of the Clinical Genome (‘ClinGen’) Resource and Director of the UNC Biocuration and Coordination Core. She is also the Project Manager for the Newborn Exome Sequencing for Universal Screening (NC NEXUS) and North Carolina Clinical Genomic Evaluation by NextGen Exome Sequencing 2 (NCGENES 2) projects. Laura has recently accepted a new position as the Associate Director of the new Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care (PPMH) and is looking forward to exciting new developments with this new program in the UNC School of Medicine.

When she is not working in clinical genomics, she keeps her feet wet (literally!) in the world of amphibian and reptile conservation and conservation genetics as a member of the NC Herpetological Society and a volunteer at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. She also enjoys hiking, biking, and traveling with her husband and young daughter.
