Attending Your Appointment
Our clinic is located in the North Carolina Cancer Hospital at UNC Hospitals at 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. For directions, please visit this website. Please plan to arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to allow for parking and check-in.
You should check in at the registration desk on the ground floor of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. The registration desk staff will direct you to the second floor, where our clinic is located.
Appointments are scheduled for 1 ½ hours. You will meet with a genetic counselor and a genetics doctor. You may have a brief physical exam. Since UNC is a teaching hospital, you may also meet with a trainee, such as a genetic counseling intern or a genetics fellow.
We may recommend lab tests for you. Many of the tests we recommend are done on blood. Your blood can usually be drawn shortly after your appointment.
An appointment with the genetics team is a clinical service like any other appointment with a medical specialist, such as a cardiologist or a neurologist. We are a hospital-based, outpatient specialty clinic. Your appointment may be covered by your insurance as a specialty service. Please contact your insurance carrier for more information. Your specific insurance plan may require a referral from your primary care provider.

Medicare and Tricare patients will be billed $98.40 for the genetic counseling visit. If genetic testing is ordered, this will undergo an insurance pre-authorization.
Genetic testing is billed separately from the office visit and may also be covered by your insurance. Our team will discuss the cost of testing with you before any testing is done. Financial assistance programs may also be available.
