{"id":10744,"date":"2021-08-10T08:39:47","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T12:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/?p=10744"},"modified":"2021-08-10T08:39:47","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T12:39:47","slug":"mutant-mouse-resource-research-center-mmrrc-at-unc-awarded-a-nih-supplement-for-development-of-covid-19-related-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/mutant-mouse-resource-research-center-mmrrc-at-unc-awarded-a-nih-supplement-for-development-of-covid-19-related-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutant Mouse Resource &amp; Research Center (MMRRC) at UNC Awarded a NIH Supplement for Development of COVID-19 Related Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2967 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2017\/10\/terry-magnuson.jpg\" alt=\"Terry Magnuson, PhD\" width=\"229\" height=\"305\" \/>The MMRRC at UNC, led by Dr. Terry Magnuson (Vice Chancellor for Research and Distinguished Professor of Genetics), was awarded a $500,000 supplement from the NIH to develop and validate two new animal model resources to support research activities related to pathogenic coronaviruses (including SARS-CoV2).<\/p>\n<p>Under the project funded by the supplement, the MMRRC will leverage three UNC specific resources \u2013 1) a humanized ACE2 mouse model, 2) a screen for susceptibility and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in over 40 Collaborative Cross (CC) strains, and 3) a custom speed congenic pipeline \u2013 to rapidly create two new mouse models with diverse genetic backgrounds that combine disease susceptibility and phenotypic similarities to human infection and utilize the human receptor to more exquisitely model infection.
