Charles Perou, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The American Association for Cancer Research has elected UNC Lineberger\u2019s\u00a0Charles M. Perou, PhD<\/a>, as a fellow to the AACR Academy.<\/p>\n

He and the other 22 members of this year\u2019s class will be formally recognized at the AACR\u2019s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., on April 16.
\nAACR Academy fellows are top contributors to cancer science and medicine who help advance the mission of the AACR to prevent and cure all cancers through research, education, communication, collaboration, science policy and advocacy, and funding for cancer research.<\/p>\n

Perou is being honored for his research that led to the identification of intrinsic breast cancer subtypes, including the basal-like\/triple-negative breast cancer subtype. He is also being recognized for the development of clinical diagnostic tests that are now widely used to stratify breast cancer patients based on the molecular characteristics of their tumors.<\/p>\n

Perou, the May Goldman Shaw Distinguished Professor of Molecular Oncology and professor of genetics, and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine in the UNC School of Medicine, is co-director of the Computational Medicine Program and co-director of the UNC Lineberger Breast Cancer Research Program.<\/p>\n

He has authored more than 470 peer reviewed articles in some of the top scientific journals. He \u00a0has been named to Clarivate\u2019s most highly cited researchers list for the past decade, a distinction for publishing papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for a field or fields and publication year on the Web of Science platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to announce the election of 23 new fellows of the AACR Academy. These individuals from across the world have all made significant and groundbreaking contributions to cancer research,\u201d Margaret Foti, chief executive officer of the AACR, said in a statement. \u201cThe 2023 class of fellows includes pioneers from numerous scientific disciplines who have collectively shaped our understanding and treatment of cancer. We are deeply honored to have them join our 289 existing fellows.\u201d<\/p>\n
