{"id":14449,"date":"2024-10-15T11:59:51","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T15:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/?p=14449"},"modified":"2024-10-15T11:59:51","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T15:59:51","slug":"department-of-genetics-welcomes-dr-andrea-horimoto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/department-of-genetics-welcomes-dr-andrea-horimoto\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Genetics Welcomes Dr. Andrea Horimoto"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_14187\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 198px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/09\/Andrea_Horimoto_UNC.jpg\" alt=\"Andrea_Horimoto\" width=\"188\" height=\"250\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Dr. Andrea Horimoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"lead\">Andrea Horimoto, PhD has joined the Department of Genetics as an Assistant Professor.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Horimoto earned her BS in Animal Science (1994), Specialization in Animal Science (1997), Masters in Animal Science (2005), and PhD in Science\/Population Genetics (2009) from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.\u00a0 She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School in 2013.\u00a0 She then joined the Heart Institute, Laboratory of Genetics and Molecular Cardiology at the same institution (2013-2018).\u00a0 Dr. Horimoto served as a Visiting Scientist in the Statistical Genetics Lab (2016-2017) and the Department of Biostatistics (2018-2019) at University of Washington, where she became Acting Instructor (2019-2022) before joining Harvard Medical School as a Research Associate and Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital as a Senior Research Scientist (2022-present).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Horimoto\u2019s research focuses on population genetics, genetic epidemiology, and statistical genetics approaches to the study of human genetics. She has been involved in applying and extending statistical methods, developing pipelines, and using bioinformatics tools for the identification of genetic variants underlying complex diseases and traits in admixed and homogeneous populations by primarily using high dimensional genomic data. Her research involves large cohorts and biobank datasets, including the All of Us study, the Million Veteran Program, the Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Sequencing Project, the Women\u2019s Health Initiative, and the Hispanic Community Health Study\/Study of Latinos for the study of complex diseases, such as cardiovascular, Alzheimer\u2019s and chronic kidney diseases. She is also involved in genetic studies in several Latin American cohorts including admixed Brazilian individuals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrea Horimoto, PhD has joined
