Each year, the Postdoctoral Awards for Research Excellence (PARE) are given in recognition of the research promise demonstrated by individual postdoctoral scholars.<\/p>\n

\n

The\u00a0Postdoctoral Awards for Research Excellence (PARE)<\/a>\u00a0awards are designed to recognize the important contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to UNC\u2019s research enterprise. This may include excellence in scholarly or academic research, leadership, advocacy, service, mentoring, and\/or teaching, during their postdoc assignment.<\/p>\n

Each recipient receives a monetary award of $1,200, along with a plaque. Each of these winners will be presenting their research activity at\u00a0the PARE Talks<\/a><\/u>\u00a0during this year\u2019s\u00a0University Research Week<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday, October 23 at 3 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0in the Toy Lounge at Dey Hall.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s PARE recipients from the UNC School of Medicine are:<\/p>\n

Marta Overchuk, PhD<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n
Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Marta Overchuk, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the lab of\u00a0Imran Rizvi, PhD<\/a>, Overchuk explores photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer, a non-invasive approach using light and light-activatable molecules to generate therapeutic reactive oxygen species. She investigates how PDT can overcome chemotherapy resistance to improve treatment efficacy and safety in preclinical models of ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n

A recent study by the lab reveals that PDT enhances chemotherapy by inducing a process resembling ferroptosis, a distinct form of cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, thereby opening new avenues for developing lipid-targeting PDT agents particularly effective against chemo-resistant cancers.<\/p>\n

Juhyun Ahn, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the lab of\u00a0Janelle Arthur, PhD<\/a>, Ahn\u2019s research seeks to define mechanisms by which certain gut bacteria disrupt host-microbe interactions in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n

Her work has revealed a presumed microbial trigger for intestinal fibrosis \u2014 a serious complication for many IBD patients that involves intestinal narrowing and blockages that require surgery. By further understanding this disease process and identifying microbial markers to facilitate early diagnosis, researchers can create new ways to prevent and treat intestinal fibrosis and improve the lives of people with IBD.<\/p>\n

Eric Hurwitz, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the Translational and Integrative Sciences Lab led by\u00a0Melissa Haendel, PhD<\/a>, Hurwitz\u2019s research harnesses big data from multiple sources, including electronic health records, passive data from consumer-grade wearable devices, and self-reported patient outcomes to develop personalized strategies for early disease detection and enhanced patient monitoring.<\/p>\n

He uses advanced statistical and machine learning methods to improve traditional methods that may not generalize across patient populations. Hurwitz\u2019s goal is to combine data streams with personalized methods to promote a pro-active and preventative approach to human health for enhanced precision medicine efforts.<\/p>\n
