Their findings were published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"newsitem\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 410px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2017\/10\/researchers-led-by-ting-find-molecular-trigger-for-brain-inflammation-image2.jpeg\" alt=\"Jenny Ting, PhD\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Jenny Ting, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brain inflammation is a key component of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, ALS, and most other major neurodegenerative diseases. How inflammation starts, how it\u2019s sustained, and how it contributes to these diseases is not well understood, but scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine have just found some important clues.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in the <i>Journal of Experimental Medicine<\/i>, UNC researchers led by Jenny Ting, PhD, the William R. Kenan Distinguished Professor of Genetics, identified key molecules that drive brain inflammation in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis \u2013 molecules that are present at abnormally high levels in the brains of humans with the disease.<\/p>\n<p>The findings show that these inflammatory molecules are ripe targets for further study and potential targets for future multiple sclerosis treatments.
