There are many resources available to help faculty learn and incorporate effective practices in their mentoring, and we encourage our faculty to participate in the many faculty training opportunities. Some of these are described below. Faculty preceptors with students appointed to the GMB Training Grant are required to have taken a mentorship workshop. We encourage the use of IDPs, mentoring philosophy statements, and setting clear professional expectations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/?page_id=9625&amp;preview=true\">Examples and other mentorship resources can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>OGE Faculty Mentoring<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2018\/12\/OGE-Trained-Mentor-e1544050719623.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4087\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2018\/12\/OGE-Trained-Mentor-e1544050719623.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a>The Office of Graduate Education in the School of Medicine holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/ogefacultymentoring.web.unc.edu\/\"><b>Mentoring Workshop<\/b><\/a> each semester, modeled on the Entering Mentoring program developed at the University of Wisconsin. Topics include: Effective Communication; Aligning Expectations; Assessing Understanding; Fostering Independence; Self-Efficacy; Professional Development; Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy. New GMB faculty are required to participate in this workshop within their first three years of appointment, and experienced faculty are strongly encouraged to participate.<\/p>\n<h3>Mental Health First Aid Training<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2020\/06\/Mental_Health_1st_Aid.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2020\/06\/Mental_Health_1st_Aid.png\" alt=\"Mental Health First Aid training\" width=\"80\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2020\/06\/Mental_Health_1st_Aid.png 322w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/gmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1391\/2020\/06\/Mental_Health_1st_Aid-193x300.png 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/><\/a>UNC\u2019s School of Social Work offers <a href=\"https:\/\/ssw.unc.edu\/continuing-education\/mental-health-first-aid\/\">Mental Health First Aid Training<\/a>, usually once each semester, but also by request for specific departments and units. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training that will give students, staff, and faculty the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mentoring students is the primary responsibility of faculty preceptors.
