These typically require coursework and attendance at seminar series. Certificates and conferred only after all other requirements of the doctoral program have been met.\u00a0 Certificate programs that might be of interest to GMB students are listed below, along with coursework requirements and how these fit into the GMB course requirements.\u00a0 Please refer to specific certificate program sites for additional requirements and instructions on applying.<\/p>\n<h2>Bioinformatics and Computational Biology<\/h2>\n<p>A certificate of specialization in Bioinformatics and Computation Biology (BCB) is available for students seeking formal training in these areas while pursuing their degree in a related discipline, such as GMB.\u00a0 Certificate students are required to take four of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bcb.unc.edu\/degree-requirements\/required-courses\/\">core BCB modules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These four modules would satisfy the quantitative\/statistical\/computational requirement for GMB plus one full elective course.<\/strong>\u00a0 The other elective could be met by taking additional modules from any appropriate discipline or any one full course.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the <a href=\"http:\/\/bcb.unc.edu\/certificate-requirements\/\">Certificate in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Chromatin and Epigenetics<\/h2>\n<p>The goal of this program is to provide students with training in epigenetic mechanisms and exposure to approaches and techniques used in epigenetic research. Three courses and one seminar are required; two of these courses (GNET 631 and GNET 621) are already required of all GMB students, leaving one course (BIOC 702) and the seminar (BIOC 703) remaining as required elements for the certificate. <strong>BIOC 702 would satisfy the seminar\/journal club requirement for GMB. BIOC 703 would not satisfy the seminar\/journal club requirement for GMB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/epigenetics\/certificate-program\/\">Certificate in Chromatin and Epigenetics website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Translational Medicine<\/h2>\n<p>To earn a certificate in translational medicine, students must take either of these two-semester series of courses:<\/p>\n<p>PATH 713 &#8211; Mechanisms of Disease (3)<br \/>\nPATH 714 &#8211; Mechanisms of Disease Laboratory (2)<br \/>\nPATH 715 &#8211; Systemic Pathology (3)<br \/>\nPATH 716 &#8211; Systemic Pathology Laboratory (2)<br \/>\n<em>&#8211; or &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\nCBPH 852 &#8211; Experimental Physiology of Health and Human Disease (4)<br \/>\nCBPH 853 &#8211; Experimental Physiology of health and Human Disease (4)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Either series would count as your electives for GMB.<\/strong> Students that elect this certificate program often take these intensive courses in year 2 and TA in year 3.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/transmed\">Certificate in Translational Medicine website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cardiovascular Science<\/h2>\n<p>The Certificate in Cardiovascular Science is available to students whose dissertation research is done under the direction of a member of the McAllister Heart Institute or whose dissertation contains a significant cardiovascular component. Course requirements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 credit hours from:<br \/>\nPATH 766\u2013 Current topics in Cardiovascular Science (3)<br \/>\nPATH767 &#8211; Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease (3)<br \/>\nPATH 920 \u2013 Seminar in Interdisciplinary Vascular Biology (1)<\/li>\n<li>AND at least one of the following (each is 3 credit hours):<br \/>\nPATH 713 &#8211; Pathophysiologic Basis of Disease: Mechanisms of Disease<br \/>\nPATH 715 &#8211; Pathophysiologic Basis of Disease: Systemic Pathology<br \/>\nPHYI 702 &#8211; Experimental Physiology of Health and Human Disease<br \/>\nPHYI\u00a0703 &#8211; Experimental Physiology of health and human disease<br \/>\nPHCO 701 &#8211; Intro to Molecular Pharmacology<br \/>\nPHCO 702 &#8211; Principles of Pharmacology and Physiology<br \/>\nBIOL 624 &#8211; Developmental genetics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These will satisfy the seminar course (anything from the top group) and one elective (the course from the lower set). <\/strong>Since only one seminar counts toward the five course minimum, only one of the to set of courses will contribute the GMB requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/mhi\/certificate-program-1\">Certificate in Cardiovascular Science website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>College Science Teaching<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0Graduate Certificate in College Science Teaching (CCST)provides students with teaching experience under the guidance of a master teacher, as well as coursework in pedagogy and assessment, with a capstone immersive teaching internship at a local institution.
